Battery tray rotted out

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by georgerunner, Apr 5, 2020.

  1. My main (driver's side) battery tray is rotten.
Thinking of cutting out the old metal and welding in a new plate.
Is this sensible and is there anything special I should beware of?

    Thanks.

You can buy the whole tray for £30-40. I’d just fit one of them personally.

If you get the metal clean enough, you can glue the outside edge of a new tray to avoid burning/setting fire to the paint on the outside of your bus.

  4. Thanks chaps, I've ordered a new tray and will try to glue in the outside edge as suggested.

Big smear of tigerseal or equivalent will do it.

  6. Remarkably, when I fitted a new tray I jammed up some wet rags to the outside of the bus and welded it in. I didn't have great hopes but you can't see a trace of the paint burning. It would have been good to know about Tigerseal at the time mind.

  7. Really?! Theres no way the weld penetrated if it didn't burn the other side of 1mm sheet.

  8. I agree it's a miracle. My intention was only to keep the burning to a minimum, but there was none on the outside.

Going by my bus, there is probably 5mm of semi charred filler in there. No way a decent weld puddle wouldnt almost melt the outside of the metal.

  11. Yuck indeed , not the end of the world though - you`ll just need to buy a lower rear panel as well ..

  12. Yeah, more of an bloody inconvenience to be honest.
Cant seem to put my hands on a repair panel for this though , other than the tall panel which comes to beyond the rear hatch height, bit of a waste of a panel and it doesn’t have the ‘72 bump for the bumper guards.
