Really grateful for @mikedjames help, it wasn’t the condenser he was asking me to check it was the solenoid. (My fault) I checked that and it does click when disconnected and connected so not that. What i did notice in the daylight that the tube i put on connecting the vac advance to the carb wasn’t tight and had quite a bit of play, (green arrow) so I’m thinking the Halfords one I bought in a rush isn’t up to it! So planning to replace that. The red arrow points to a tube, which I’m pretty convinced was blocked when we worked on it at the weekend, so wondering if something has fallen off here, the end was very corroded. The yellow arrow points to a wire which connects to below the dizzy that looks like it’s touched something hot which looks like I need to replace too. However, still can’t get her to idle at all. She starts fine and keeps going at revs but as soon as you lift of it starts to die. I’ve reset the points after the RAC chap had fiddled with them as they were well out. Any thoughts? Worth taking the idle jet out and cleaning it too. Yellow arrow looks like wire to oil pressure sender
Thanks @paradox I’m working today but hope to try this later! @SundialCamperSpecialist if it’s not a daft question how do I do that! Cheers Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Blocked off the hose with a new screw. Managed to undo the idle jet, dropped it, but then felt smug as I’d carefully constructed a cardboard trap just in case I dropped it. Then as removed the trap I dropped it again! Spent about an hour retrieving it from the never regions of the engine. Cleaned it up and very carefully put it back. Still started but refuses to idle. Decided to change the spark plugs - don’t know why just thought I’d do something which i know needed doing for ages. Found the screw which had come off the hose in the first place. All went well until I disconnected the last lead and it came apart at the spark plug end! Replaced lead! So three hours later...she starts first time every time..but refuses to idle! i really do understand your frustration - but it is funny to read! The carefully constructed cardboard trap
Thanks Para, yep Mike also suggested that and that was ok. In the end I’ve taken it to the garage and asked them to look. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I’ve decided to share it warts and all so that others can learn from my numptiness! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Hello again! Can’t quite believe that it’s been over a year and a half since I’ve posted something. Long story short! Autumn 2019 got messed about by a local garage who took months to misdiagnose a starting problem. Finally took it to a lovely bloke in a nearby village who did his apprenticeship on VW bays, he fixed it in two days and has made it run the best it ever had. You were right mikedjames by the way! Then the pandemic hit, my work meant that we were at the centre of the response in our community so I have been hunkered down with that for the last 18 months. I have been working on the van and because of my course I was able to repair the guttering on one side of the roof. Took it to a bodywork place to get the guttering and the hinges repaired on the side I couldn’t do - only to find more bad news! A previous owner hadn’t tackled the rust on the roof just riveted a sheet of metal over, painted it and put the roof back on so it couldn’t be seen. So the work will take longer and wont be ready till after Christmas. A friend lent us her Bongo to visit our daughter who is studying fine art in Falmouth. This experience and meeting up with Revdub and nik , as well as a nice chat with a lovely couple in a van in a car park in Falmouth made me realise how much I miss this community, and despite everything still love having a VW! Hope it’s ok if I come back to play? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Those garages are beginning to trip themselves up, I reckon we’ll all be leasing stuff soon and the local chop shop might be chopped out of the loop.
Remembered how to put pics up! Roof off and offending skins revealed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
What was under the skin has been revealed…more holes than roof sadly! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
