Avoid a fire, everyone should read this

  1. Probably not but you can never be too careful I also carry a fire blanket and 4 other extinguishers, you could say I'm paranoid. :)

  2. Has anyone managed to access the vapour system on top of the fuel tank on a type 4 Fi without dropping the engine out? Ive changed the filler elbow and am slow working my way through everything else as the weather permits.

Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

  4. I have, the fire wall needs to come out (don't forget the two screws underneath) If you have a centre mounted twin carb, this has to come off. :)

  5. Your right enough, once bitten twice shy. :)

  6. Two screws underneath? Do you mean they are accessed from under the vehicle?

I can't remember how you access them (probably from under the bus) but there are 2 screws that go into a lip along the bottom of the fire panel.

  8. This link shows 2 different set ups for a late bay. The earlier late bay has the upper arrangement with a vent for the filler hose coming from the top rear of the tank. The small rubber elbow item 22 (VWH didn't have it when I got mine, but Coolair did) perishes as well and will allow several litres of fuel to spill straight out if you fill the tank to the top. Not sure what is different on an actual early.

  9. Bloody hell!
I think @Paul Weeding checked some of mine when he had the engine out I think? (Paul?)
Think I'll have a check round anyway just to make sure. I've got no smell of fuel but better safe than sorry.

  12. My little red pipe is missing completely... And my breathers at the top of the engine arent joined to anything, just have a lovely open ended T - piece pointing all those lovely gases directly at my engine  and I imagine, from the smell when I put fuel in the filler neck itself has remained for the entirety of its 40 year life..
Should probably get round to that...

  13. Get it sorted M8 ASAP. :)

  14. I will get round to it at some point, as I highly doubt its going to be on the road until next summer anyway I have time..
Also, even though I hadnt got round to it, I genuinely hadnt forgotten that it was on the to - do list,
which I'm quite impressed with myself about.. haha!

  16. I definitely did the fuel lines... I can't remember if I checked the breather ones - Been a few dubs through the workshop since then

I'm going to have to check @Owen Snell 's, as his van stinks of fuel at the moment  You can really smell it up the corner vent next to the fuel filler!!

  17. Hey Flakey... I read your post shortly after you sent it, but the penny's just dropped now (talk about slow!). The PO replaced the original carb in my T4 lump with twin Webbers, so the tee-piece (shown as 15a on the diagram at the start of this thread) isn't connected anywhere. I guess it should be connected to one of the air filters?

  18. Doesn't smell when it's running though or when it's been filled up. I think it's from the carbs. I did actually look at the filler neck recently and there was no smell or signs of leaking from the tank compartment.

Worth noting that the early system vents through the filler cap so a vented cap must be used. The later system vents through the air filter and a sealed filler cap should be used.

The fuel hose supplied in these kits is SAE J30 R9; this is supposed to be resistant to E5 and E10 Ethanol enriched fuel but many have found it degrades quickly, sometimes in matter of months. And interestingly the premature failures appear more on VW air cooled engines than on any other. For a small additional cost it would be worth using 100% Bio fuel hose such as this: http://www.advancedfluidsolutions.co.uk/55mm-id-732-100-bio-fuel-hose-diesel--petrol-2015-p.asp
