Avoid a fire, everyone should read this

  1. Crikey that's not very long at all.

Just replaced mine, managed to get three years out of them until ⬇️

  2. I would be worried about having an lpg tank plus the petrol tank. Should be checked often then.

Auto fire extinguisher sounds a good idea but would it have coped with the sort of fire in the pics. Must have been a catastrophic failure.

I don't have a hand held fire extinguisher in my van as I don't think it would make any impact on a van fire and I think getting out and running away is better than risk being badly burned going round the back towards the fire and trying to put it out.

  3. Timely reminder to check.
    Very useful pictures
    Thank you

  4. Looks like Brazilian bays are just as susceptible. Petrol station forecourt Newquay Cornwall yesterday :(

    You'd be surprised.
A guy who used to come to Techenders put out a fire in his engine bay with just a small extinguisher. Apart from a bit of melted wiring you'd barely have known it had happened. If you know what to do, a small extinguisher is significantly better than no extinguisher.

Bummer especially if just having filled up. Could of saved themselves £60.

  7. If you are about to buy new fuel hose - You want 100% bio fuel hose, NOT R9 rated

    5.5mm i.d 100% bio hose:
    £16.19 p.m Advanaced fluid solutions http://www.advancedfluidsolutions.co.uk/100-bio-fuel-hoses-petrol--diesel-hose-0--100-199-c.asp.
£16.50 per metre http://www.coolairvw.co.uk/ These guys also offer a TLB discount
? per metre at VW aircooled work as they sell in kits. Kevlar reinforced?

    7.3mm i.d 100% bio fuel hose:
£17.51 p.m Advanced fluid solutions. The website doesn't state who manufactures it, but when they sell on ebay it says cohline
    £20.50 per metre coolair vw
£25 per meter VW Aircooled works. Supply cohline

When I was looking to buy 100% bio hose I told the supplier my set up: Tank to 6mm mechanical fuel pump, to filter king to twin carbs. I was told that I needed to get exact measurements of breather pipes, carbs etc, so they could supply the correct sized pipe. I waited for my engine to come out to get measurements of the two poxy tank breathers 7mm i.d. There was no point in doing this as everyone sells the same two sizes of pipe. So I could have ordered it all before the engine came out. I think everyone sells cohline stuff as well!

    Other suppliers
http://jtarubber.co.uk/index.htm. john@jtarubber.co.uk. He sells off cuts on ebay under Seller montyidd, you can message him for alternative lengths etc if they aren't listed. I'm not sure if his stuff is 100% bio fuel hose. I'm pretty sure he is the supplier of the filler pipes that many vw people sell though. See above post for further info on jta rubber

I hope this will save someone some cash.

I have bought far too much fuel hose. I would have been in ignorant bliss if it wasn't for this forum & thread.
On the flips side a mate lost his bug to fire!

Blimey! That must have caught v quickly. You'd think you would try to get it off the forecourt more incase of worse fire, but I guess the open drivers door means v quick catch and driver doing sharp exit. Not at all a nice thing to happen.

That's a bit un-P.C.. He looks straight enough to me, not that I'd know..
I like the way he casually glances at it, ponders what to do for a moment and ambles around the front of the bus...
I'd hope my auto extinguisher would snuff that out but it doesn't stop me checking my mirrors more than I do in my car, always on the lookout for flames and smoke!
    Frightening stuff.

  12. My engine recently out for gearbox work and I was looking at the hose from the fuel pump to the carbs - noticed it was splitting - bearing in mind it was only replaced 2 years ago ! I think this is now gonna have to be a yearly maintenance item - we cannot trust the modern fuels not to rot the hoses we are using. Gonna try the bio hose next.

  13. Help! I'm trying and failing to find 100% bio lines, how important is this in choosing replacement lines?

  14. Very important. There are loads of threads listing where you can get it from. I'll try and find one

  15. You can't have looked very hard, the page before, on this thread before lists loads of suppliers and costs:

  16. Thanks @paulcalf I had read the post, but unsure of lengths and size(s) needed for my 2.0fi bus - 5.6 or 7.6mm, plus the smaller diameter for fuel tank breather hoses.

No specialists I've contacted can advise me, and the bus had none when bought(!) sooo, yeah... struggling a bit!

  17. Yeah mine was type one engine with twin carbs.

@davidoft or @pkrboo may have correct diameters for your set up

  19. A real burner

  20. So I've just checked my bus and well, all the breather hoses are disconnected... Now I do not know when this was done but is there logic in this or is it something I should address?
    Thanks in advance!
