This is where this thread could cause issues ( Apart from malcs constant crossover issue ;) ) because people might think theirs is a certain year and all good but something will stick out like a saw thumb saying it's not, I'm sure the same happened on Morks resto thread when some bloke whose name I can't remember said it can't be the year it was purporting to be, he got shot down in flames and we still ain't had the definitive answer

No we are wrong I think mate. A Novemeber 71 is an early crossover. I think they ran Aug 71 to Aug 72. Sorry @Pickles - I misread the date.

at the end of the day i know one thing for sure, unless you have had or know the person who has had your van from day one it's gonna have bits on that it shouldn't have, remember 10 years ago these vans were worth nothing and bodged with any parts they could, also remember when tax free was stopped 1000's of these and landys and minis and beetles were rung to get them tax free. I don't want to start a row but i'm just saying that anything pre 73 is always gonna have the chance to have had summat dodgy done to it.

Point taken, I have just apologised to pickles, I am trying to get to the bottom of this without fall out s or silly comments from people who just want to say something on a thread, Thus far my thoughts are becoming clearer and I feel the thread has been contributed to positively, It does seem as if there was a distinct production run of Aug 72 - aug 73 vans that are as I said in the initial post.

  5. Most definitely. My 74 is an SA CKD too, as is the Doka. The 74 is definetly a 'special reserva'
    :)

possibly, i'm not ever sure on build date versus model year but who cares anyway.

my comments weren't meant to be silly or stir it up, i'm interested but stand by the fact that unless you've had it from new you'll never know.

I will say this Rick.. Most people who bought these vans new were better off and as such kept them well maintained, there are of course vans that were well and truly messed with by spacemen with spanners but on the whole, by most I mean like 80% or more were properly maintained up until a point in time when they were as you say worth little and available to the likes of me. There are a lot of mostly og vans about even mine and you know what that was like has 90% of it's og fitting and running gear.

  9. My 72's have the same steering wheel. The 74 had a totally different steering wheel, and the 76 has a later one
    Go figure

What do VW have to say on the matter? I know they refer to 'type 2b' but does this not just cover all non-early bays or is t2b just bays in general? You need to do some proper digging Malc and write a book!

you get none of this with a proper late bay you know. once they had sorted all the rubbish out and put the lock in the sliding door and wire hangers on the rear hatch and better clocks in the cab it was easier.

I have done some digging Niall and this is the outcome so far. I could do a full account of part differences I know of so far, but without asking people for input I can't get to the bottom of it and post up with certainty.

  13. Just to add another into the mix...

I have a 72 destined for USA built in Emdem which had sealed unit headlamps like the later bay with a 'carrier' attached to the lamp which then fixes to points in the front panel. You then do the headlamp surround to this. This arrangement is on a 72 low light but identical to the 76's I've had.

My 72 doka and 74 kombi both South African both have headlamps which have the 3 screws, separate lenses and bowl which together with the headlamp surround all create one unit, the outer part fits on a lug and is then held in place with a single screw on the inner side of the headlamp bowl.?
    :)

  14. I've also encountered 3 different types of rear brake attachments and 3 different types of front brakes and indicator stalks???
    :)

The odd remark chucked in to diss the theory is beneath you Neal, you know better and can add some positive's to this thread I know you know ( a bit ) :p

  16. Also 5 different types of instrument binnacle and heater fixings
    :)

It would be nice if you could document these things for future reference.

  18. Me? No I'm serious. I'm clear that the SA buses are oddballs and maybe the US buses too due to the factory they were built in. Maybe mine have beetle parts thrown in too? I'd love to know the true history, so much easier to buy parts as I have a shed full of new bits that don't bloody fit anything!
    :)
