Aug 72 - Aug 73 late bay discussion. 73 model year.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Poptop2, Apr 7, 2014.

  1. Our Devon was built Dec '72 (though the planned production date from the M-Plate is early '73). We have a letter from VW to confirm this, as it was required for the tax exempt status.

It has locks in the door handles, fuel filler flap, early steering wheel & column (but later steering box), front discs.
The engine & transmission was swapped for a type IV 2L, so I don't know what type rear brakes we actually have. Linkages etc are also likely to be hybrid.

Is that the 'build' date, if so can we have some pictures, It seems the steering wheel, indicators and column changed around about then to a newer style ones that we see on 74 on lates.

No fuel flap. Does it have late indicators and later small splined steering wheel?

  5. Mine is October 1972 and sounds the same as yours @poptop2 (unsure what you mean about the brake spreader thingy though!).

  6. Has a fuel flap, late indicators, early steering wheel. disc brakes, engine hatch, type 4 1800 engine. It's a U.S lefty.

It's something I had trouble with when I first restored my van and it went for an mot, the rear brakes were poor so I asked them to do them. Turns out it took weeks because of them being different shoes and spreader bar. the 72 one year ( which was two) only brakes had the spreader bar built into the one shoe apparently. I never got to the bottom of it as I didn't do the job, otherwise I could describe it better, others on here know though.. @outlaw is having this issue with his xover atm and @Diddymen had to sort his- same as mine.

  9. Aha, I can't remember when I last sorted my brake shoes, but worth knowing for when it pops up again. Good to know these things about our 'special' buses! ;)

So far nothing is contradicting the thread point, apart from bb's mates van with the later build date. it seems though as if the production run was between Aug 72 and Aug 73. This makes sense when you think about it. Holiday to Holiday. then tooling change in the Aug holiday!

So to recap for those that cba to read the whole thread ( can't blame them ) I believe the Aug 72 - Aug 73 ( not May now) was a distinct production run. They have their own features that are not found on the earlier crossover or the late bay. In essence ' a late crossover. Crud title, but apt I think.

Does anyone know the fuel tank changeover date, I will guess when they changed the engine bay?

It did have, but I had to buy another last year and I really haven't noticed.

  13. Pictures of my indicator and wiper switch when I had trouble with my horn I used the Haynes manual and neither the early or the late corresponded with mine when I took it apart, I could be wrong mine might be the same as everybody else's but not the same as Manual also does anybody now where I can get the bearing that sits in the coulom as mine is not the same as 74,

    Steve,

  14. I have the old style fuel tank but as I have an inspection hatch, I would presume I have the new engine bay layout?

I thought for some time there were early tanks - crossover tanks and late tanks. I still don't know for sure?

That is exactly the set up that people with our type of vans have, initially I thought it was the same as a early crossover, but evidently not and they only used this set up for a short while-- same as mine and others with a 72/73 van.

can you be 100% sure it's not had new arches in it's life, november 71 should be an early shouldn't it? are you sure it's genuinely the bus that left the factory? - i'm not slagging you or your bus, just the fact that the dates seem awfully strange for a crossover?

engine hatch because you have a type 4 engine i'd presume?

I thought the wheel arches were flat then?

this is what i'm tactfully getting at....... a 71 should be a full early as far as i know and deffo shouldn't have big vents, i know he said "are you saying it's a ringer" to diddy, but i'd like a closer look at a 71 with large vents and flared arches 'cos to me it wasn't invented then.
