Anyone used a needle scaler on old underseal?

  1. has anyone used a needle scaler or needle gun to remove the old underseal. Just wondering if it's worth buying one as I'm sick of scraping underseal of and I've only just started. The underseal on my bus is hard and brittle so what's your thoughts.

It will probably clog up ....try a narrow sharpened wall paper stripper tool ...if it's brittle should come off with that ....it's cheap to buy .

  3. It would need to be cold to chip it off so probably the wrong time of year unfortunately

I took mine down to a local sandblaster who raised it onto tressles and blasted the underneath in no time, cost a hundred pounds but i think it would cost about 50 pounds on brushes scrapers etc plus the time and heartache , He would only do up to the firewall as i still had the fuel tank in which i understand the reason why e.g fire risk
phone your local up and see what they have to say

  7. I'll put a sharper edge on the wallpaper scrapper and give it another go, like the Idea of sand blasting but not sure if there's anywhere local to me.

  8. I did mine with a scraper, be patient and take your time. I did a small area for an hour at a time, so enjoyed it. Please wear eye googles. Have fun doing it.

I am not an underseal person and prefer paint. After the scraping I treated any light rusting areas with Vactan and then went on to brush paint the whole underbody with Rustoleum gloss metal paint. Did another coat about 6 months later. Gave the wheel arches 3 coats. Rustoleum is cheap and quality paint. I liked it so much I went on to do the engine bay with hand brushing.

Nice thing about the paint is its easy to wash any dirt off and if you get underneath you don't get any messy stuff on you.

  9. Oh Yes!!
Worked a treat where my old underseal way very hard & flaky, which was most of it.
Any fresher stuff applied over MOT repairs just gummed up and smeared.

Noisy, dirty work. But oh so satisfying.
Ear defenders & safety glasses, preferably a face shield, are a must

  10. After spending a bit more time scraping I decided to just buy a needle scaler and give it a try and it works great on my underseal that had gone hard.
