Anyone got an Eberspacher D1L? info needed

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Keith.H, Jan 12, 2013.

  1. Is anyone running an 24V Eberspacher D1?, i have one but im missing the relays, so im after a description of the numbers on them or ideally a piccy, i dont know whether its a standard type or something specific to the heater
    Thanks in advance :)

  2. Unfortunately, it's not a relay - it's the control box for the heater, full of electronics. The heater won't run without it.

Have a look on eBay for used units - usually loads on there. You can buy them new, but they're expensive.

  3. Ive got the ECU but there is also two? relays that runs the pump, 4 pin jobbys

  4. Aha. The relay is unlikey to run the pump...the ECU (through the green wires) provides pump pulses.

I'll have a look at me Ebers docs...

  7. No numbers unfortunately, without nipping down to the garage i think its about an inch square

  8. The Ebers diags are fairly cryptic. May well be that the upper relay in the pic is for the glow plug - strange, as the B1L petrol heaters don't have these, as I recall.

Post up pics of the tops of both relays, which should show contact nos and Ebers part now.

Obvious question: why do you have a query about the relays? Is the heater not working?

  9. Just retread your post - you're missing the relays completely?

  10. Yes missing completely, the wiring diagrams are confusing, the pictures label 1 relay for a 12v and 2 for a 24v ,mine a 24v has only the 1 relay and three various wiring diagrams i have refer to it but dont show it?
Its beginning to look as if its a normal relay as it has two thick and two thin wires going to it

  11. Hmm. As you're aware, basic Ebers wiring is pretty simple, but they make it 10 times more complicated by showing every damn timer or thermostat they've ever sold.

I've got an old 12V B1L in the garage - I'm fairly sure the 12 volters don't have a glow plug relay. There's a fairly hefty relay inside the ECU itself that may do glow plug duties.

I'd buy a cheap 24V 30A relay and see if the standard terminals match up with the black socket. Likely, I'd think.

Have you only got one of the white 3-way connectors? Likely this goes to the thermostat. Should have red, brown and yellow wires.

This is my entire 12v petrol installation. No external relays.

I did clean it later. :)

  13. Very tidy :).

Propexes are ok for the working classes, but Eberspachers are indeed God's Own Heaters ;)

  14. Yes they dont make things easy do they
Here are two pictures of a D1 both supposedly 24v, the first one has the same wiring as mine (yes 1x 3 way connector with Br, Red and Yellow)

But this one seems to show 2 relays

I think i will do as you say a put a relay in it, this one i just intended to heat the garage, so no great loss, i have a BN4 in the Bay which i do know my way around apart from the switches :'(

  15. A mystery. Try a boggo relay - will likely work, I reckon. Ebers will sell you one, mind...for £65

You probably know, but to fire the thing up just connect red & yellow on the white connector.

  16. Hi,
The two relays on my 24v D1L are:-

The tall black one:- 53 416 001 it looks like a normal Normally open relay, it's labelled as a normal relay too:- pins: 30, 87, 31, 15

the small one: is a really standard Bosch 24v relay @ 10A

My Eberspacher D1L is broken, the silver ECU has a burnt out resistor inside and no schematics "anywhere" (I am a google master normally, but I've drawn a blank on this one), so I'm either going to have to reverse engineer the analogue stuff inside it and work it out, or design/make my own (do you think there is any market for a cheap alternative to the £360 eber want for one? - I am an electronics/firmware guy, so it's within my capability - I just need to work out how it's all timed (how often does the pump tick etc etc).

    Good fun times ahead!

  17. mine's a 12v diesel D1L and no relays on it, just the ecu. (which I have a problem with; it doesn't go through the shutdown sequence, I have to manually disconnect the pump and wait for it to cool and shut down every time)

  18. Hey, sorry to butt in in guys but Zed i'm loving that eber set up!what model no is your eber?

I have no idea. I "found" it installed in a rusty metal box, tried it out and it worked so I fitted it in my van. The wheel well was rusty and one thing led to another...

I couldn't quite unattach it from the box so turned the box into a mounting bracket.

  20. ^he's shy. It's a B1L.
