I've had one for 40 years now and can testify to the rust problems - mechanicals have been no problem.
They also rot at the top of the petrol tank but new ones are fairly cheap <£100 and you can get them in stainless steel
Electrics are no problem as there's virtually nothing there.
The build quality from new was not exactly brilliant so dodgy panel gaps and shutlines does not necessarily mean its been in an accident - although i can testify to its strength if you do have one
