Another weird water leak - identified - THANKS

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paulcalf, Sep 4, 2015.

  1. All sorted now, so this thread won't be of any interest unless you are trying to find a damn pesky leak!

I've got a very strange water leak coming inside the van and i'd love to know how all the panels join up to help me check where it might be coming from.

I've poured water in loads of places and it doesn't come in anywhere, then when i drive it in the *******ing rain it comes in but i can't find the source!

It enters the van to the left of the red pen, just above the small round bit of rubber, but when I pour water over the window rubber it doesn't come in!

I thought it may be entering down the seam inside the air intakes, but doesn't seem to be there either.

I'll have to go and buy some food dye!

    Any help much appreciated

I'll ask @zed to get a few extra pics whilst his windows are out!

  2. Just a thought.... Is it worth using a pressure washer and spraying at areas of the bus?

  3. That's a wizard idea.

  4. Have you checked the speaker covers ??
    Obvious place to start ....

  5. Most likely is you have a rust hole under your window rubbers or somewhere under the sliding door cover (or cover on opposite side)

water will come in, trickle down the inside panel onto that lip by your red pen and then drip out of the end (where your red pen is)

look under the side cover with a torch for any holes, and try spraying water upwards under the cover.

....as a short term fix you could plug the hole with some sealant (when you find it ....it will be there :( ) ....but ideally the window will need to come out to repair the rust hole

No, no, fill it up with water and see where it comes out.

  9. Is that what the pros do?

  10. Quality idea. My dad gave me his pressure washer ages ago and I've not used it.

  11. careful with the pressure washer .....if there is any rusty thin metal you could end up blasting more holes

  12. I don't remember it being that bad 13 years ago when I had a full resto. So I'll be gutted if it looks like that under there now, although if water has been getting under the new rubber as long as that then I suppose it could be much worse.

Is window out to check and then put back in a techenders job or a glass company job?

Thanks to all for the replies

  13. I won't do that then

  14. around the glass and seal should be fine ...just not under the covers until you've had a good look

....it will be getting in around there somewhere.

you could pop the covers off relatively easily and lift the bottom of the window rubbers up ......which would give you an idea of if it is badly rusted or not

  15. Is it easy for a numpty to refit that cover thing straight when I'm done? I don't want to leave it looking rubbish

  16. Side windows are a piece of pee pee to do, will need someone to push from outside while you pull the string.

  17. yes easy to get back .....they only go on in one place, the holes are slightly elongated in the cover from memory so there is some slight adjustment that cam be made
the sliding door side cover is only slightly trickier as it bolts through to the inside of the van.

  18. Yes, you should be able to take the cover off and clean and seal under there and put it back in place and be in fro dinner in an hour. Careful of the "rubberish" seal that runs between the cover and the van side wall, you can reuse it if you clean it good and all bits on top and below it before reassembling. On our van I clean the area (after the paint job) sealed it with black silicone right over the old seal and made the seal look wider is all under the window. No one notices and the water stays on the out side.
