  1. 1. Can any 1 help, i am restoring a 78 VW bay window. I am wondering if i can add power steering to the resto ? if so what unit can i use ?

    2. I have smoothed over all the vent's front and rear, i was told that the wrx lump would get enough air to cool it, i fear i have been told a porky and the work has cost my Liver !!!!! i am wondering what i can do to encrease the air flow without the vents?

    Any pointers ???

    Cheers

  4. theres someone one here a sponsor that does a drive in drive out epas (electric power assited steering) kit for the bay cant remember the name now but it aint cheap, im not a epas fan motors seem to overheat and burn out, on my split ive built a electro hydraulic pas setup using a vauxhall steering rack various vw bits and a saxo electro hydraulic pressure pump the van has been running like this for 3 years no problems nicely weighted and you can park with 1 hand even with a small 1960's nardi wood rim wheel :D on my bay i've built a similar system uses a few differnt bits and bobs to the split but as yet untested due to still being at a bare shell stage :'(

as for cooling a wrx motor wheres the rad? and why would smoothing the stock vw vents make any difference to engine cooling?

  5. where are you from someone might be able to recommend a place to get the power steering conversion fitted

  6. As well as the rad you would need to consider air flow for the intercooler too - also the WRX bonnet scoop feeds air over the turbo to reduce intake manifold temperatures - I'm not sure how covering any existing vents is going to help at all

  9. only place for a rad on any aircooled bus is underneath between the chassis rails with ducting, not a fan of the fellows rad i wouldnt fancy a massive hole drilling out of the middle my chassis rail

  10. that was the epas setup i was talking about not cheap but easy

  15. cut into the chassis and your van is going to need a BIVA test and be re-registered

  16. just out of interest, are any of you guys engineers and understand how to do stress analysis on steel??

Mainly interested as there's a lot of "can't put holes in the chassis" nonsense!! You have to use a degree of common sense, and not go mad... adding additional material, and not going through the folds on the top or bottom edge of the chassis rail are things to watch for :)
