After some messing about, fitting twice and managing to burn the main cable (looks like it was shorting somewhere). Changed cable re-fitted up and running, checked voltage seemed ok at 12.7. Now battery light stays on?

  4. does it go out if you rev over 3k?

  6. Regulator is probably knackered

And the shorting was probably the stuff too long on the back of the alternator?

Tried 2 regs, looks like trying a third?

Edit- don't know if it helps but it was putting out 12.7 on D+

  8. Did you cut the stud down ?

Voltage is too low to charge the battery. Do you get 12.7v on D+ with the engine running and with it off? My guess is the alternator is knackered either because of, or causing the burnt-out cable.

Looks like its coming off again :(. Checked with the engine running, and the plug off the reg.

Edit - thanks for the replies

Sorted . If I give advise on things like this I always say it's a loose connection. And what was it
At least I'm getting faster at changing it :)

    Great well done.
Agree always check connections especially earths and their routing.

Just out of interest which connection was loose?

I put a new connector on the alt cable and must not have crimped it right and as I put it back together it came loose - something you can't find without stripping it all down again.

  17. If the cable that came loose went to the battery, wouldn't have caused damage (apart from a great shower of sparks).

Sound like you're sorted now. What kind of output voltage are you getting?
