You need the roof vents. These are notorious for getting in the way and people cracking their heads on it.

I don't think he's rejoined but Cooldad still had the compressor mounted in his bus. He also has the cruise control stuff still on situ.

    This should help:

  5. you'll need a condenser, drier and the tubing of course. the condenser on my bus was underneath in the centre with a couple of fans attached, the drier sat in the wheel arch on the drivers side(LHD)

  8. Is'nt it worth trying to get something out of a modern Nissan Micra and cobbling a solution - 30+ year old aircon units will be like lugging around a washing machine!

you can just see the bottom of the drier unit just by the shock (was actually taking a pic of the front beam)

I like driving with the windows open and the quarter lights directing air at me.

  14. These old systems are rubbish. Even if you get one charged and running without blowing the 30+ yr old seals, they drain a lot of horsepower and wear the engine out faster. It's like towing a hay wagon.
What's worse is they don't even cool very well.
I have done just a little research on upgrading my own A.C.. The new systems are much smaller and much more efficient. Even the dash unit is tiny. But if you would like to keep your original dash unit I should think it's possible.
Trouble is, that may be all you can keep. The new cooling chemicals do NOT mix with freon and you can never get all the freon residue out of the other components. So you can't just replace the compressor.
The details are fading, but basically it would
work for a while before the chemical reaction causes catastrophic system failure. (and by then the warranty on your compressor has probably gone tits-up.) That's what I read anyway. It also said if your installer doesn't know this, go someplace else.
And you don't even want to know how much a whole new system costs. It makes a Propex heater look like pocket coins.

  16. Your setup wouldn't have had the roof vents Chris, it was an aftermarket accessory. I removed and skipped the whole lot from my bus a few yrs back, it was the same as yours and the pics pkrboo posted...

Bloody useless system, we think we got it working once, served no purpose, we'd have been cooler putting the cooker on. I wouldn't bother, but if you really do want a AC system, there are aftermarket versions that will do ok, but the van will never have the results that a modern daily will...

  18. Like i said earlier take out the entire unit from a nissan micra, compact unit, very robust but you will need to cobble something to the engine?
