Need to get an independent valuation for insurance, but I am not in a club. What do others do in this situation?
Peter James offer agreed value up to a point with just photos. After that you need a club. Not sure where to go as mine isn't worth much.
i am (was) a member of the sussex vw owners club and got a valuation with peter best for £12,000 - i told them what i wanted it to be and send off the photos.
Don't a lot of them insist you park in a garage in order to get agreed valuation, or is that historic?
I did mine with HIC and they told me I'd need a valuation from a club. I joined the type2 owners club because they have someone who does valuations and it's cheaper if you are a member. PM if you want the contact details, although I never managed to get a reply to my emails! In the end, when I got the valuation forms through they just asked for pictures and details and sent me what they thought it was worth which was less than I'd paid but I had bought a rebuilt Aussie import for loads of money :-[ I didn't have a garage problem - declared it on drive.
peter james let you self certify the value up to 15,000 with a minimum of 6 pictures - the more the better though, and they said proper 35mm were preffered.....i took about 12 and told them 14,000 they agreed. if you want a larger valuation you need a club or car restorer etc to agree.
We had to send off pics , copies of bills etc and was given a valuation of £14k. Not happy with it so will be looking around in a month or so when it runs out. Thinking of joining a club also.
If you're after a high valuation, its much better to provide your insurance co. with an independent valuation than to allow them to value it from photos. How anyone can value a bus from photos is beyond me.
Their reason they set it as that was cus i had done most the work myself and didnt have bills for thousands for work done by garages etc. Seemed harsh i thought. We are with Glyn Wood but not next time. Ive heard that ype 2 owners club do a valuation at some shows for £25 so might join.
Any decent restorer will value it for you, the guy round here charges a tenner. The danger now is people believe vans are worth much more than they actually are (hence comments like "investment" etc) and try to value them accordingly. If the insurance co. disagrees with your valuation you can end up with a whole heap of hassle needing engineers reports etc...
I'm sure some people think insurance companies are stupid. For every £20k bus you show them to justify your "valuation", they'll be able to show you an £8k one. It's a bit like the current housing market: People put in low offers on the basis that prices have dropped but fail to lower their own asking prices.
