Accuspark bites the dust..

Noticed a strangeness about starting over the past few months.

Fired immediately, then died and started after a 10 second crank .

Today it started OK but backfired.
Some low rpm roughness which smoothed out at speed. At the end of the journey there were occasional hesitations mid throttle.

Coming home over 11 miles it got rougher and rougher and needed more and more throttle. A backfire when pulling away in first gear, and the engine would pull roughly.

Temperatures and pressures all normal, but kept misfiring more and more.

At idle it would idle then surge briefly then recover.

I put an oscilloscope on the primary of the coil and the dwell was varying from nothing to about 45 degrees, even double firing.
Checked 12 volt feed.. no wobbles.

Swapped it with my backup points distributor and it idled smoothly with proper dwell...

Another electronic points unit bites the dust. I will check the mileage...

  2. For a £40 pound part if it's lasted for a few years it's done ok
Mines been in my van for 5 years I only do maybe 3000 a year
Maybe time to get a spare one
I do carry another dizzy with points
Ready for the day they pack in :)

  3. The newer ones have a improved circuit that stops them frying if the ignition left on.

  4. Don’t rate Accuspark not great for quality or reliability. Pertronix are a better bet but still appear to have quite a failure rate. I suppose its the heat & vibration that kills them.
Good ol points & condenser backup

That was an improved one. So far that will be the third failure .. this one lasted 28200 miles..

Just like the previous failure (a simulated hard rev limiter) , the fault manifested as a progressive worsening of the ignition, not a sudden failure. It was still drivable for 22 miles today, and the distributor swap took a few minutes.

  7. Had ours about 5 years no issues, just had another for beetle and had to send it back the quality was poor. Looking at another option as we speak.
Also carry spare module and a complete points dizzy.

The cat has decided that something labelled "stealth" maybe belongs to him.. as he approaches middle age he maybe needs some help in catching mice... he is snoring now..
