A restoration for Iris

  1. The only problem you might have James is cutting the thread. You wont get a die stock to turn as the other bars will foul the handles stopping it turning. Unless you have a plan, that is?

Think the die I ordered has an attachment for a socket wrench so hopefully it’ll work. Failing that I’ll come up with something!

  3. Spent a couple of "lunch hours" going through this from the beginning, amazing workmanship throughout!

The horn is back to how it should be now.

I ended up ordering a coupling from both VW heritage and C&C:

Both of these couplers correctly isolate the bolt holes, compared to the one I originally put in which must’ve had a metal core:

    Wiring all connected up:

And working like it originally would’ve:

A few bits from the last few days.

Poptop canvas re-attached to the van:

Picked up the bumpers, front grill and track covers from the shot blasters. The only bit that needs some further work is the rear bumper. Shot blasting revealed some rot on one side, and some impressive dents:

Luckily it was just isolated to this section so I let some fresh metal in, and got the worst of the dents out with a hammer and dolly:

And there were 5 holes drilled in it (presumably for a towbar?):

I have no need for them so welded them up:

I gave the welded sections a skim of filler, and then into epoxy and high build along with some others bits I had cluttering up the workshop (rear bumper needs some further shaping yet):

They’re never finished right?! Hoping to be driving beginning of March. Still lots to do though.

Yeap. That was the one from C&C.
The heritage one on the right is from SSP. Both seem of similar quality.

  11. Hi James, Lovely work as usual, but "date setting" dodgy terrain!!

  12. We have a rear bumper - straightend (not 110% straight) covered in red oxide...... based near Dartford - could sell as changed to a chrome finish...... possible

Only drivable! Still plenty to keep me busy for a long long time!

  14. @The Drama Man, any good for you Chris?

  15. Are they Desmond's bumpers, finally? Or are they your originals?

Meant to tag you in this one! Yes I ended up using both of them. Both really solid bar the tiny bit of rot above. Thanks again for donating these to the project. My original rear one was toast.

  17. No Problem. When I feel a bit better I'll have a hunt and see if have a spare blank for the speedo cluster, then I'll come down for a look see.

Lovely job you’re doing there! Gonna be awesome finished!
If you don’t mind me asking, where did the pop top rams come from please?
I’m thinking if I go solar I might need them too...

    Cheers!
It’s a spaceroof so it came with the struts. They’re nitro lift struts which SGS engineering sell I believe? I can grab the part no and details if you like?

Oh right I thought it was a Westy roof! That’ll teach me not to read the whole thread! It was the 70 plus pages that put me off and thought it easier to ask! I’ll check out the sgs website thanks
