A restoration for Iris

  1. Looking good! I've just done a complete rear end like that and I've got another to do now:(
Those rear corner panels fit well don't they? Bit thin, but loads better than the old ones.

Cheers mate. The only klokker panels I've bought have been the rear arches and this corner and both have been pretty good, although as you say a bit thin.
I've got a full gen corner to go on the O/S as it's in a worse state with the section around the rear hatch rusting through.

  3. You seem well organised with your Trello board, wish I had done something similar it might not have taken 5 years then:mad:

Queries for tonight to those that have replaced full corners (@brothernumberone @davidoft @womball). As I'm replacing the whole corner I'm trying to replicate the factory joins as much as I can. The return that joins to the rear quarter above the bulge is sandwiched between the rear quarter return and the inner corner panel. It has a row of spot welds joining it to the quarter panel, and then further back a second row joining it to the inner corner (I think).

What's my best bet on joining here? Do I drill out both rows of spot welds and remove the corner return, welding the quarter to the corner from inside the van, and the corner to the inner corner through the vents? Or is there a better approach?

    @JamesLey

Is it a panel van ? The Vw way is to cut out the inside panel of the van, directly next to the vents to gain access for welding, I usually trim back the new corner and the van so I can leave the sandwiched bit in place , you can get enough welds through the vents but cleaning the welds back is near impossible

I may be misunderstanding something here but if you're trimming the corner down to avoid fiddling with the sandwiched bit can you not plug weld the rear quarter to the corner from inside the van?
Is the sandwiched bit welded through all 3 panels?

The window frame welds to the corner then the inner rear corner welds over it, but not by much, unless you have a panel van or have cut the inner out the place you would be welding is not accessible as it inside the window frame panel

Forgot to say ours is a panel van so I can access the back of the rear quarter. Think I'll start by trimming the old corner return down to where the inner corner meets it. Then see how easy it'd be to remove the welds that join the corner return to the inner corner.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I asked you at the start if it was a panel ;) then you should be able to drill through the 3 panels and weld it from the inside easy peasy , have a look on my facebook page, I did a rear 1/4 on a panel, same but the other way around

Perfect. Cheers fella. It's the corner I bought off you a while back too! I remember you showing me your VW body shop book which had the inner panel cut out but thought there must be an easier way. One good thing about a panel van I guess!

Tell me about it. Glad I bought it when I did though as they're pricey now. On the home stretch on the welding front now.

  13. I'm going to try and cut though the vents next time I do one so I can leave that seam alone. It's a fiddly job. Easy with a panel van conversion though, as Dave said, drill through then plug weld. You could even get a clamp on it if you've got the window out;)

Cheers mate. I ended up drilling out both sets of spot welds. I'll be able the plug weld to the quarter from inside the van and to the inner corner through the vents.

N/S engine skirt repaired and trial fitted.

In order to repair the O/S skirt I need the battery tray and new corner in place so it’s off with the corner! The inside of it is in relatively good nick but needs a jolly good cleanup.

O/S rear corner trimmed and trial fitted, as it’s a genuine part it didn’t need too much fiddling to get it to fit but still took quite a lot of time:[IMG]

Pretty happy with the engine lid gaps too:

Trial fit of the battery tray:

And finally making a start on repairing the O/S engine skirt (the whole reason I’ve had to trial fit the corner and battery tray):

Making a start on the O/S rear wheel arch. The tub is in amazing condition with only the very ends needing repair. Cavity wax seems to have kept it from rusting out. The outer arch needs a fair bit of fettling to get it to fit properly though, I’m having to rebend it where it joins the middle panel as the curves don’t align.

O/S arch fettled to perfection. I had to persuade it (hammer) to match the curve profile of the middle panel. I couldn’t work out for the life of me why the panel was bulging and popping when pressed near to the arch. I finally tracked it down to the lip not being bent enough, so when I was clamping it to the inner arch the panel bulged out. Quickly fixed with the trusty hammer again to bend the lip round further and no more popping.[IMG]

Cut out the previous repair to the rear of the inner arch, which consisted of the original rusty piece sandwiched between two sheets of tacked on metal. I should get this repair welded in tomorrow and make a start on repairing the D pillars.
