I bought a set of alloy wheels from dub freeze, I was assured they would fit my bus. The issue I have is... The stud holes in the wheels are 13mm and the studs on my bus are 14mm. So my question is, do I drill the wheels out to 14mm? Secondly, if I do drill the wheels, do I need to buy different studs and nuts? Or will the standard ones do the job? Thanks in advance
The shoulder of the nuts needs to fit the shoulder of the wheel hole or you can compromise the integrity of both. Also, the wheels are nut centric - meaning any machining of the nut holes will need to be precise - how do you plan to drill them out?
We can assume they weren't designed for a bus from the bolt diameter. So aside from the (very correct) statement by @Moons you should also consider if they're correctly weight rated for a Bus? I speak from experience here, I had the centres on a set of wheels come completely detached from the rims, could've have been deadly. Are they aftermarket or alternative OE wheels? Put some pictures up and/or dimensions and I'm happy to give you an opinion but it will be just that, an unqualified opinion. The only sure fire way to tell is to have the manufacturers original specs or to have one destruction tested. All this said, both my buses are running very unorthodox wheels.
I know someone with a bench drill, so I was going to do it on that. So basically, my main concern should be making sure the shoulders match. Thanks
I'll put some pics up in a bit. They are jbw ac8's. I had them from midland wheels. The weight that is stamped inside wheel says 875kg. They were a bargain price so it's not a big deal if I can't get them to fit (it would be nice though)
@Baysearcher I got them from midlands wheels, I assume that's who you mean by MWS. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say.
I'll let you know what they say tomorrow. I'm not holding out much hope though, considering I only paid £90 for the set
Yeah, I just saw on the website. I asked the guy why they were so cheap. He said it was because they had tyres fitted to them to use as a display, and now they're a discontinued wheel. I'm starting to think now that they fitted the tyres and then realised the holes were the wrong size. Oh well, you win some, you loose some.
They have certainly been known in the past for being Marmitee where it comes to customer services and quality of wheels. This was a while ago though. Good luck!
MWS is Motor Wheel Service. http://www.mwsint.com/site/cms/contentChapterView.asp?chapter=1 They manufacture and restore wire wheels. Midland Wheels is an entirely different company.http://www.midlandwheels.com/ They don’t manufacture or restore anything.
So today I decided to try one of the other three wheels from the set..... And they fit perfectly. Turns out the one wheel I was trying was a different stud pattern! It was 5x114.3 and the others are the correct 5x112. I've just spoke to the guy at midland wheels and he is going to try and find me one with the correct stud pattern. Result!
