76 westy sink wiring

  1. Hi guys so in my bus the sink pump and switch wiring seem to be disconnect / missing could someone be able to send some detailed photos of which wires go where .

    Many thanks

    john

  2. No pics but on my 79 Berlin a red sheathed wire comes from the fusebox, under the floor mat, back to the sink cabinet. It goes on to the pull switch on the front of the cabinet. There's also a red wire returning from the switch back to a connector for the pump. This connects to a red wire into the pump. The return black wire on the pump goes to an earth tab behind the sink. All pretty straightforward but easy enough to twist wires together to test it. About all you can get wrong is to wire the pump back to front so it doesn't suck.

  3. Thanks for the reply I can see a brown wire coming through the back of the cupboard unit from the body , could you confirm what that is ? Is that the earth as I cannot find the live feed at the moment .

    thanks Jonny

  4. Quite likely to be earth, (12V negative) as most original VW earth wiring is brown. Mine’s probably been rewired with black.

  5. Seems like I am missing the positive wire , I can see some black wiring /sleeving at the back of the spare wheel section running between the body and floor do you think that could be positive cable ?

Download the Westfalia Repair Manual from The Samba it shows the wiring route and the wiring current flow diagrams indicates which colour does what. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1978westymanual.php

On mine the positive for the pump came from the front, under the carpet, below the seat and through the bulkhead in black sleeving.

  7. Hi there so I am having some success I found the red cable and followed it back to the fuse board and there is a inline fuse . Should this run from the engine battery or the lesuire battery as I don’t have the lesuire battery fitted . I currently have no power to the red cable .

thanks for the samba love k I was helpful .

    regards John

If you’re talking about the main fuse box at the front of the bus it’s supplied from the engine battery – that's how Westfalia powered the pump.

    happy sundays

  10. So just an update power cable located and I have power to the cabinet . The sink switch works however the pump is dead ( any recommendations would be appreciated) water has spider cracks and is grubby but not leaking . If anyone has one then that would be great .
    Cheers john

Post a pic of the tank John, if that's what you want, so we have a clue as to which type of tank. Not that I have one whatever it is.:)

  12. Do you have a submersible pump where the wires and outlet pipe feed in from the top. If so this is the easiest fix. Just search for a Whale submersible pump- about £12. That’s what I have, in a plastic jerry can, which usually provides enough water for most camping trips.

  14. Hi all i am using a original tank and pump which connects to the underside on the outside of the tank. So i am sitting here thinking when i tested the pump i did not have it connected i just had pipes to it but i am now thinking the pump might need the water gravity fed to pump it out. The pump did spin but i put a hose on it thinking it would suck the water then pump it out but i might try having the water gavity fed it all that makes sense.

I bought one of these, a centrifugal pump, with a brushless DC motor with a ceramic magnetic rotor, water lubricated, also used for PC cooling. It has no shaft seals, the only seal is an O ring at the top.

Quite a few pumps have lip seals on the shaft and a cheap brushed DC motor inside. Ice or wear can see to those.

I hacked my original pump as the Devon setup needs priming, so I kept the hand pump part. I know its Devon, not Westfalia so impure but..

Top on left . Has been there about 9 years.

Looking on Ebay, most pumps in this style are also submersible.
