65 Split - mixing it up a bit

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Paul Weeding, Oct 11, 2012.

  1. I've told Andy that he should advertise it for £25k... it's got quite a few nice little bits done to it, plus what I'm now doing... puts it right in the middle of the market pricing that I've seen!!

Been working on the old mans jeep today, as I've got a fair list of jobs to do, and they need to use it in a couple of weeks...

I've got the fuel tank in paint, just need to get it fitted, and the engine can go back in!!

  2. Tank in

Started the prep on the remaining panels today... couple of days, and I'll be hanging them all up to get some primer thrown on them

  3. A good job Paul, its looking nice and two sayings spring to mind!

Good things come to those who wait and........ quality takes time (I made the second one up!)

  4. Back at it again... got a million and 1 things to do at the moment!! :(

So someone had butchered the late split/EB rear hatch so the earlier split push lock button would fit, and they'd just filled the 7mm hole and kinda just crammed the lock seal in... so out comes the welder ;)

Little bit of flap disc fettling got the fill piece to approx the right shape...

bit of weld, bit of dressing, and job is a good-un!! :D
    [IMG]

Next on the list is the cab door handle recess... these cargo doors were originally of a lhd split, so the recess is a little out of place!!

    cleaned out the paint
    [IMG]

bit more metal teasing with the flap disc
    [IMG]

    Tacked in
    [IMG]

All welded in, just needs a skim of filler to finish

Popped the van outside and wrapped it up to keep the weather out
    [IMG]

I'm in the process of paint stripping the doors n bits back now... so they'll be ready for paint in the next couple of days

  5. Had a good session with the strip discs today!!

All of the remaining parts are stripped down, just need to do a little filler work, then I can hang everything up for priming!!

    Post stripping
    [IMG]

    Post hoovering ;)

Hopefully ready for paint by the end of play tomorrow

  6. I know nothing about paint .... But wouldn't it pay to paint all final colour at the same time to save any colour differences due to temp and variables ?

  7. That's why I heat my shed when I paint ;)

It's mostly damp and cold that can bugger paint finishes up as it slows down solvent evaporation

  8. Blooming of the paint is the biggest pain when conditions aint ideal

  9. Almost there with the prep... Had a quick count up and I've got like 21 pieces to spray o_O damn these splitties have a lot of "bits" o_O

This is where I was this morning after I had a dust off outside with the airline!!
I only half stripped the door due to it having filler in the bottom from a preexisting bottom replacement... so I hand sanded the bottoms of both cargo doors!!

Shed needs a damn good hoover out!! Dust everywhere!!

Passenger side cab door needed a little work!!

That's it for today!! Well photo wise... I've got a fair bit of flatting to do still, but another day and they'll all be buttoned up!!

  10. Looks good Paul! Can I ask, when you weld in a patch, do you tack it in place and then go round the seam with weld or do you tack it, grind it flat and then skim it with filler? Just wondered what the best way of doing it is as I will have some bits to do on mine over the summer :)

  11. I always fully weld... if you just tack it, and it has a skim of filler over it, then water can ingress into the filler as it is slightly porous...

  12. Bit dusty in there paul that paint must have been real thick

  13. The swage on the cab doors had 10 layers of paint on them

I've also found 3 or 4 different primers under the last top coat

Not to mention the hardcore filler primer that is/was 1mm thick in places

  14. I dont think the paint would have been that thick when we painted landys with wallpaper paste brushes

Each landy went from green to dessert sand in 20 mins lol

  15. It explains why the paint was cracking out on all the seams :)

I bet stripping back an ex mod landy could almost tell some stories ;)

  16. Will you be digging out the seams and re sealing on my bus dude?

Those ex forces landy will tell some proper stories when you strip them back
I put some dead scorpions on the bonnet of one and poured paint over them untill they were well covered

When all our landys arrived in saudi they were all od green
We were given packs of green scotch pads masking tape and wallpaper paste brushes and some yard brooms

The first two we did we washed scotched masked and painted
After that we ran out of scotch and mask and got a rolocking for going too slow
Apparently the od paint had a high infared signiture and the opposition had accuired ir technology
The rest had no prep at all apart from knocking the sand off them with a yard broom then slapping them with sand paint with a pasting brush lol

I have to say it stuck well for a while but when it came off it came off in big sheets lol

  17. I normally redo the seams... I'll get in there with a rotary brush on the grinder

Bet that landys looked a bit mental with the scorpions on the bonnets :D

Cutting disc or Spot blaster is much better than a wire wheel for seams really

  19. You need a fair old blaster to shift OG sealer!!

And a cutting disc will mark up the metal too much... I'll stick with my tried and tested wire wheel ta :)
