356 Speedster.

  1. As requested (like I need an excuse!) a few photos of my 356 Speedster, I bought this last year in a pretty sorry state for itself having suffered an electrical fire.

A few of the horrors found, it appeared that the main live feeding the coil from the ignition had melted doing a lot of damage.

Looking at the installation and erm 'modifications' to the wiring it was hardly surprising,

And the dreaded evil scotch locks!! I mean wft is going on here?? these things should be confined to hell

So there was nothing left to do than rip it all out and start again,

And a new look built and fitted in conduit and proper glands where required,

There was an extra relay added to protect the ignition wiring from the coil/engine and also a battery cut off for saftey and security too.

  2. I'm trying my best to condense 450 photos into a little as I can lol,

Their were lots of years of neglect to clean up,

Its not great but a damn site better then it was and a hell of a lot cheaper than a new porsche surround.

The engine took a whole heap of work to get it looking up to scratch and deserving to be in such a cool car.

Most of the tinware was past it and took alot of resurection, it was genuine stuff though so worth doing,

Lots of repairs and filled in a few unsightly holes but didnt go OTT with it, prepped and painted in my favourite industrial grey.

Also pretty lucky we decided to check the tappets and timing before running it up, other wise this may of been ugly.

  3. While the paint gun was out the tank got a little make over, its a focal point when the bonnet is open and it also was letting the car down. I was also happy to find the bottom of the tank rotted through and pin holes all around the outlet. I say happy because I nearly didnt take the tank out and that proved it was the correct thing to do

With it up and running, driving and stopping and ready for its MOT I thought it wise to check the rest. The car had been stood for some time so while this was not a welcome sight I guess it was inevitable.

So it was taken home where all the rot was cut out,

And ill always have the reminder of doing this car, gloves kids!! although I doubt it would of stopped a 1mm cutting disc.

  4. All the holes were welded up,

And everything sealed prepped and painted to hopefully protect it for a long time to come.

    Few nice gauge mods,

  5. While I had the car at home (to do the welding), I decided to give it a proper clean and polish,

    From the before,

I've done a fair bit of mopping and detailing on cars down the years, only playing about really but I was surprised at just how well the little speedster cleaned up. There were a lot of what looked deep marks I didnt expect would come out, some are still faint but so much better.

  6. So on the 20th June off she went for her MOT, which apart from a headlight adjustment she passed with flying colours

So all that was left to finish the car off was some new carpets, these arnt great do will do for now.

With the wheels cleaned, new hubcaps on and the last bit of trim finished.... she was stored away for the winter lol

Although I did have her out last week and she has developed a bit of a misfire from being sat all alone, ive done a mini service (plugs leads etc) but it hasnt cured it. Im hoping to get back down this week to have a proper look.

I've tried to condense it but thats my little speedster up to date and thats mostly what happened to my summer 2016 and why I'm still van less now!!

  11. Brilliant - thanks for sharing - if only the bus engine bay was so easy. The Speedster is the Porsche I would love to own .

  12. Gosh? Hat's off to you sir? Fantastic work and incredible patients? I'll stick to bricklaying that's my love. Thanks forthat. Are you taking her to any shows this year? II'd love to see it? Cheers dude

Lovely lovely looking motor....very envious here at the moment..

  15. I take it looking at the mot and reg it's a chesil speedster ?

  16. What products did you use for the polishing? Looks like it came up great.

  17. Thanks all, this one has been a labour of love. I've actually left a lot of little details off (and many, many photos :) ) as I didn't think there'd be much interest in it here. For example theres around a weeks work in the steering wheel alone, it had to have a spacer made and all the nasty varnish was stripped off and everything re-polished.

It is a Chesil Speedster but is still registered as a black beetle which is something I'd like to look into changing.

Its frequent nickname has been Y.. oh.. Y.. oh.. Y.. (did I buy it!), but I'm liking Delilah. Another one would be Gizmo.. as you cant get it wet, it leaks like a seive!

It all depends on the weather! My mate runs another Speedster (not a Chesil but cant remember his but its quite a rare kit) and a split as part of his wedding hire business, I may be tempted to just use it for that if the opportunity arises.

It was done mostly with 500 cut which isnt much more aggresive than T cut, the more stubborn parts where done with G3 and the heavy marks had some 2000 wet and dry action too. I'm no proffessional and I usually bottle out with the mop after burning through the paint on a Mk1 Golf years ago lol

It was topped off with a good carnuba wax and buffed up.

Said original paint 32,00 miles Mk1 Golf that I blew through the paint on the wing tuesday_wildchild

I havent had chance yet to get some decent photos outside, these are a couple of my favourites pre cleaning. Shows just how bad it was.

You can really see the contrast in paint here as the engine lid has been semi cleaned.
