34 pict 3 Carb recommendation

  1. For all of those who haven't followed my painful experience at getting a 34 pict 3 that works - here's what I've learnt...

    1. Had an unlabelled 34 'peak' 3 carb to begin with. It was pretty shot so needed replacing.

    2. Bought an new £140 empi 34 pict 3 from coolair hoping to solve the problem. Unfortunately I bought a dud, idle was all over the shop after eliminating all other possibilities. Credit to coolair for accepting return no questions asked though.

    3. Got a recommendation from Martin @ Bristol Cherished Cars (top bloke) for Kevin at Riverhaus. He's an enthusiast who refurbs original Solex's. A week later £190 worse off but with an engine that runs sweet. Solid idle and carb is clearly a much higher build quality. After a bit of tinkering with the help of @Baysearcher today and its all good.

So recommendations go to Kevin (riverhaus.co.uk) and Martin (bristolcherishedcars.co.uk)! Cheers muchly!

  3. Yup was tearing my hair out for a while!

  4. Refurbishing an original always the best

  5. I once had one rebuilt by a guy called Laurie Ellis, it was a work of art. I nearly put it on the mantle piece instead.

    Machine 7 certainly agree. http://www.machine7.com/section.php?xSec=3338

  6. Ive had two original solexes i couldent refurb as they were that fuzzed up with corrosion
Even if you manage to clear it out the passages are left enough oversize to have an effect

If the cost of a refurbed original is heading towards £200 then i may start doing a few refurbs again
