2011 Awards. Did something go wrong?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Baydreams, Sep 4, 2011.

  1. I took a holiday for a week. Which was nice. And when I came back I noticed some posters had something like '2011 Award Winner' listed against their names. So I guess the draw happened whilst I was away. They're all worthy winners, some of whom I also voted. TLB is just one fab site - there's some incredibly helpful and knowledgeable folk around, people who go out of their way to help complete strangers - karmas all the way from me. I don't know who won what because I can't find a listing anywhere. Then I came across a posting by DUBious. I was amazed to see he'd been awarded nothing! No folks, I'm not related to this guy and I've never met him either. But to me, if I could name three of the most helpful, entertaining, overall top blokes and gals on this site, it'd be DUBious. He was nominated for several categories. I can't beleive he didn't win a thing.

the awards are done at run to the hills every year. if more people had voted then maybe dubious would have won something. but as marowak said, coming 2nd in 2 catagories is damn good!

i think horts said voting was quite good? anyway i doubt the big crash helped, a lot of stuff getting lost or not rebuilt detracted from the voting i reckon, also a lot of the awards (in my opinion) depend on how and when you join, i joined as a one trick pony (lets face it) if my bus hadn't been what it is i'd have nothing, as will be proven next year no doubt....i do agree though i was supprised how the voting went on some of the topics but it's only a bit of fun (or it is to me) i certainly didn't set out to try to win anything and i'm sure DUBious isn't worried, he has a few gripes but certainly not to do with the awards.

  9. Hmmm. It's difficult to put this into words. It'd be better if we were all sitting round a campfire. Then I could explain it better. I'm a bit worried here that some people might read this the wrong way and think I'm only complaining because I didn't get nominated for something. That's not the case, I assure you. I'm rubbish. All my posts are rubbish. And I know absolutely diddly squat about mechanics. I just drive the thing and know where to put the petrol. I hope too that some folk don't think I just have a big thing for DUBious. That's not true either. Joker, for example, is another one who's incredibly helpful and knowledgeable on this site. And he didn't get an award either. And there's others too.

Now some might think I'm taking this all too seriously. In fact, I'm just trying to consider others' feelings. I know how we all pride ourselves on our karmas. So I'd hazzard a guess that having an award next to you name would be taken with so much more pride. It means a great deal.

That's a point - shouldn't people get awards for receiving the highest number of karmas per year? Not just the highest scorer either. Perhaps the top 10? That would be a fairer system.

Now, I'm going to refer to Baysearcher here as an example ONLY. I'll make it quite clear that this is not intended to rub anyone up in the wrong way. It really is just for example purposes. So imagine this:

Imagine I'm a Newbie coming to this site for the first time. Seeing Baysearcher (BS) had won an award (it doesn't say exactly what for) I would pay a hell of a lot more attention to his posts than say DUBious or Joker (D&J). As a Newbie, BS's posts would be taken with so much more weight. It would lead me to think he's a much more helpful, friendly and knowledgeable member than say D&J (and I wouldn't have a clue that he actually won it for being the grumpiest member). Now don't get me wrong, BS has helped many on this site including myself. But, at very least, and for purposes of clarity to Newbies, it should be specified as to exactly what a member's won an award for.

In future, I think a bit more thought should go into the particular categories we can all vote for. But if the same were to apply, I reckon it would be fairer to award those coming second and third too. Or maybe we could have a category for who Baydreams thinks should get an award for being 'An Incredibly Helpful, Friendly & Knowledgeable Top Bloke' ;) ? If so, I'd like to nominate DUBious and Joker. I can provide another 8 names or so too. ;)

I think you should spend less time thinking about such un-important matters!
It's a bit of fun, nothing more, nothing less.

can't believe this is still going on. it's a bit of fun that's all. the only person i think could be a little upset is pmacs as he lost out on karma. but that's life and karma really is like that.

anyway the awards are a bit of fun, some thought went into them same as last year, if anyone can point another forum who does this please send me a link and we'll see if we can learn by it. as they say on another well known forum, if you don't like how we do things 'jog on'. however we're friendlier so please stay :)

on another thing, i don't care if people have gripes about the forum, if they can't be arsed to pm to discuss i can't be arsed to worry.

so back to my clique (including baysearcher)

and i know most have never met me so might think i'm being obnoxious, i'm not but i'm fed up reading whinges about the awards etc.

    have a nice day :)

  13. No whinges here. Just thinking of others here. And just giving ideas of how things could perhaps be improved. No-one's perfect you know. Not even me. 8)

ok i've collected my toys from the garden.

i'm locking this thread as i'm bored. if you have an issue with it please pm birdy.

    in summary

the awards were intended to cause upset and ill feeling and were a total fix. those winners should be ashamed that they took the award knowing others were more deserving.

    FACT

roll on to 2012 awards :)
