1st time stripping & rebuilding 1600 engine

  1. Thanks that worked great, first head back together.

new 1641 B & Ps went on as well. should i be using anything to seal between the barrel and the block? the bentley says metal on metal but this seems really odd to me.

any advice regarding compression ration? what sort of figure should i be aiming for? should i shim barrells so that compression ration is the same of all 4?

due to small variation in deck height and head CC my compression ration ranges between 7.4 - 7.9 i used this calculator http://cbperformance.com/v/enginecalc.html im lost with this, not sure if that is good or bad?

  2. Officially, paper gasket under the barrels, but sealant is better. I use Curil T, but Hylomar or similar is fine. No silicone! Just stops any oil weep from cylinders. You’ll need to stick the barrels on and check the deck height, shim under the barrels if necessary. All good fun.

Stock CR is 7.5, you could go up to 8:1, mebbe a bit more. Need to cc your heads to do the sums, but that’s quite fun as well. It’s all a bit...approximate. Going to 1641 won’t really make that much difference. Any improvement likely to come from refurbing a knackered engine.

  3. Il order some Cyril t, thanks

Heads cc 50 to 54 (used a syringe full of water so could be a bit out) 55 is stock so looks about right. Deck height all 1.55mm.

  4. Stock is 50 to 52, as I recall. Varied a bit in production. Curil T’s good stuff, but quite hard to get. I had to order mine from Germany, but only took a few days. Hylomar or The Brown Stuff (can’t remember the name) is fine as well.

The cylinders should be the same height and the CR should be the same on all 4. No problem if you need a thicker base shim on one side of the engine. Sealant on the cylinder base but no head gasket.

I’m surprised there is such a big difference between combustion chamber volumes; that’s a significant variation in the CR between cylinders.

  10. As above, that is quite a lot, and quite a variation. Worth measuring again? Stock on a type 1 is 50-52ccs chamber volume.

  11. Thanks, I will double check the cc. I don't have all the proper gear just an old syring. Il will spend some more time and make sure it's all bang on. Before going any further.

You only need a syringe and a disc made from a bit of old number plate, or a CD.

  14. A old CD with a small hole to pump fluid in until it's full and you know how much has gone in...I had funny looks off the chemist when I asked for a 100ml syringe....

Worked well for me. I did it twice and came up the same result..

I thought you were too old to be a glue sniffer.

  17. Curil T’s the gateway to EpoxyMastic...

  18. Thanks such a simple but great idea. I will give it a go.

  19. Tried this a put some grease around the edge of the Cd to stop any leaks got 53cc on everything checked it multiple times. Thanks for the tip and thanks for the collets heads all back together now.

Would you use any Sealent on the push rod tubes? Any recommendations on what to use? iv ordered some we permatex for the barrels.

  20. Just a smidge of Curil T or similar is fine on the pushrod tube seals.
