1975 Bus Turns but does not start

  1. I'm a new bus owner and trying to learn my way in the world of our legendary bus.

We bought our bus last October and is was running great. When we brought it back home, I sent it to my mechanic to have it checked. When it came back, ww did not find anything that could be a threat so stored it for the winter.

This spring things started to go wrong... It starts but dies after 3-4- minutes. We checked the Temp2 sensor and changed it (it showed 53k ohms when cold).

Next week, it would start but die as soon as I let go of the ignition key. We checked the wire circuit and it seems fine.

Next week, it does not start anymore. (turns well but does not start)
We checked double relay twice, we have spark, the motor turns and the fuel pump runs when I push the flap of the AFM. Anything I should look? I'm a bit dry in ideas.

    Thanks Guys!

    You say fuel pump runs.

Have you taken the pipe off to see the ‘spurt’ or are you just listening?

  4. Does sound like you’re losing the feed to the dual relay, it comes off the starter solenoid, check at that end for poor connection if it’s been stood a while.

Just listening but I did untighten the pipe and there was gaz coming out.... I don't know how true this is but I was talkning to a friend of mine who is a mechanic and he said that in the last 20 years, it only happened once that he saw an electric pump not pumping even when it turns. You convinced me to unhook completely the pipe and look if it pumps haha

  6. We did the full troubleshooting of the double relay in the bentley book and everything passed with flying colors. Terminal 86a, 88a, 85, 88d, 88y 86C, 88Z. Everything looks fine.

It was more that there could be no fuel. If you are listening to the pump turn, it could be spinning with no output.

  8. Could you ask your mechanic friend to help.

  9. Yep I will check that in the next couple of days and I'll let you know... Would there be a way just by taking off a spark plugs or something like that to see if the injectors spray? It would make a lot less of a mess than disconnecting the pipe from the pump. The Previous owner changed the fuel lines and overkilled it by putting extra thick pipes. I can't pinch them to stop them from leaking haha.

  10. I did... probably more than I should... Let's not forget that he does not make $ when I ask him questions... I'll probably give him $ to thank him when I'll be able to start the WEST but for now... My wife is not very happy that we can't drive it and doesn't want me to spend a fortune on it since it did run good in the winter time a a month ago. (Let's not forget it never left my garage)

  11. Stale fuel?

  12. Are you actually getting a spark?

  13. Yes checked it twice ;)

  14. It might be but I put about 1\4 tank in december because it was getting low. And an extra 10 L last week. All Premium (I know it only need regular but that's what I had in my portable tank for my lawn mower and snowblower haha). I doubt that the the fuel is the problem... I'll have some time this week to I'll try what CollyP says and then might go get me a fuel pressure and a compression tester gage.

  15. Take the plugs out give the a warm up. Also, make sure there's no condensation under the dizzy cap etc.

  16. Try replacing the condenser on the dizzy. Mine failed a while back and the engine would turn but not fire or maybe fire but not keep running. Simple, cheap fix. Always carry a spare now.

  17. we changed the cap last weekend (had a spair one) and the dizzy wires (4 plugs and coil). I'm planning on taking the spark plugs out to see what's going on this week :)

  18. Is there a way to see if the condenser is working fine? I'm in eastern Canada and parts take at least 2 weeks to get to my place because most of them comes from California or Europe. With the distance and the customs... I can order an extra condenser but it will take me almost a month to check if that was the problem. If I can only find why it doesn't start, i'll be a happy camper (in my garage hahah)!!!

  19. Do you know anyone nearby with a camper or bug? Swap theirs on and see if it resolves the problem. If it does, order one. If it doesn’t, still order one and keep it in your van.
This assumes you don’t have electronic ignition of course, in which case you won’t have one at all.

  20. AHH!!!! I'll check but i'm pretty sure I have Pertronix ignition because The P.O. gave me spair parts and in there, I have an open box for the Pertronix electronic ignition. So basicly if I don't see a condenser on the side of the dizzy, I know that I have Pertronix E-ignition. Right?
