Hi guys! Have been lurking around on this forum before but have not registerd, but now when I have a Baywindow I thought it would be time to do it. I bought it in May 2015 and have been under restoration since that time. Will post up pics on the resto progress when sparetime allows, since I do all my work on the bus on weekends and late nights, besides a fulltime job and my 1 year old son wich all takes alot of time too. Some info about the Highroof bus: It started it's life as a service bus for the Swedish railroads, maintenance for trains and rails. It have been well kept after, greased and undercoated every year and have very little rust for being up north like Sweden. Lucky me! From begining it had a workbench and toolshelfs inside and a communication radio (witch can be found in the m-codes). The color is a special order. It has the big Eberspracher BA6 unit installed. Bellypans under floor for extra strenght (highroof mcode 191). Rare headlight washer mcode 288. Heavyduty 63ah battery installed from factory (probably for the extra power to the radio and heater). It was sold by the Swedish railroads in the late 1980's to a old man that worked at the same company, the plan was to build a camper but he had alot of other cars also, american classics and the bus got forgotten in a barn and some years ago the man past away. And thats when I found it, still parked at the same spot sine 1989 inside the barn/shed! Have been looking a longtime for a highroof and when this came up for sale I just had to buy it. The plan is to build a camper for the family to enjoy on the weekends and vacations. We have a 1966 splitbus samba we are driving now on summer roadtrips but it feels like a little to expensive bus to scratch up and park anywhere over night, if you know what I mean. So this Bay will get full camper interior, fridge, dual batterys, running water, solarpanels, roof bed, heater etc. The ultimate campervan for the wood and countryroads! Built to drive and durability, not for show or dragrace! I started this project in May 2015, I try to take photos as often I can and keep the thread updated. Pics and videos can also be found at my website: www.maindrive.org or Insta: maindrivegarage Let's go.... Anyone who know the "unknown m-codes"?
The cluth wire tube was broken so needed to make a new stronger one Sandblasting and sanding never ending story
Hi Martin, Ive seen your build thread a couple of times over on thesamba; looks very good, keep the pics and updates coming on here!
Thanks for the replys guys, here is some more pics from the build: Floor in primer Finally painted it all in Off white 2k car paint
Prep for removing undercoating and all chassiparts like front beam, wires, shiftlinkage, transmission, trailingarms etc So dirty work and so boring but it always worth it... This bus turned out to be so much better shape then I ever could dream of. Nice factory paint under the old coating. Time to remove spindles and torsionarms and the beam and everything else for that matter Ordering everything needed for the chassi from Just Kampers, wow what a fast delivery and superb service!
Removing old undercoating is boring specially when it’s -20 celsius outside. Atleast its 15+ inside the garage. Takes alot of blood, sweat and tears and is not showing much later, but good to know it’s like new under also. Only going to drive it on the summers anyway... Parts off to the sandblasting After many hours the old undercoating is removed! Old pic I found on the web. Pretty cool!
Wow! Fantastic thread...Nice work! Those high bulkhead dividers are great! Are they one of your unknown m-codes? I've got an m-code (510) for the (now-missing) full height divider in my 1970 panel van. The photos on your website are really nice too. I love all the suspension and brake shots. All very inspiring for my upcoming camper restoration (same colour too).
Good point! Thats very possible I think. Maybe somebody on here knows about it? Because not all highroof had the high bulkheads I think?
