People say about fuel filter due to amount of heat in engine bay and if it touch's something hot could melt leaking fuel.

Don't get fuel hose from halfrauds plenty have and needs replacing due to cracking and breaking down within the year.

I think cool air sell some hose that's about £40 including clips they guarantee it for 25 years so if your going to change the hoses and can afford it then get that stuff.

I think the hoses break down much more in these vans due to various reasons - crap hoses to start with, layed up in winter and the hot/cold nature of the engine bay.

Where about in N London are you?

  5. Thanks guys all interesting stuff. I've never thought about fuel hose as much as I have this evening. TBH though the £45 set seems expensive when standard stuff (especially if reusing the old clips) would probably add up to less than a tenner but it's food for thought and I will read the thread linked to. If I knew I were keeping the van for the next ten years I'd certainly do it.

As to the filter location thanks for clearing it up. To be honest I'm probably more with lost-en-france on that one - the filter is a good place to check if fuel's flowing in the event of problems, and as it's a regular service item good to have easy access.

Incidentally I wasn't suggesting that the Halfords brand was a guarantee of quality, just saying that old-fashioned braided hose is still sold and used - so it's not necessarily as old as it looks.

Anyway I've been up to far more important stuff. I just polished my table leg up. I won't bother posting a pic.

    And I'm in N4.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I think a lot of cracking up fuel pipe is hooky stuff personally. Codan and Goodyear make good hose. Buy from your local motorfactors or hose supplier rather than on-line is my advice.

  10. No spannering yet, but gave her a good wash and hose down today. Came up nice. Glad to see there was nothing nasty under the spare wheel despite accumulation of leaves and debris.

"Deluxe" trim on front bumper is falling off (one side removed) thinking to remove it permanently to match the rear bumper. Also thinking rollered rustoleum on the lower half to get the primer covered up. Can't decide whether to stay orange or go red. I've got a tin of red 7365 (RAL3000) here already and the logbook says "red" too... I do like orange though. Decisions decisions.

  11. Orange is the way forward:)
Great looking bus, got to love an ebay purchase. Good luck with it.

Hope you got the grey ones.

My experience of this is don't change unless you have too!

  14. I think that's your third suggestion to leave well alone so far. I'm liking your philosophy. Maybe I'll just sit in the back of the van and put the kettle on :)

I do try to avoid fixing what ain't broke...but... the doors don't really close properly (you can probably see in the pics) and following a hose down when I opened the passenger door water poured out of the step... I bought the "German/OE" ones from C&C, I think they are the grey ones, seem to be rated by those that have used them. I think worthwhile. A dry bus ought to be a happy bus.

Is it a fiddly job then?

  15. Quick question: Any idea whether the paint colours of my bus are standard VW ones? I'm guessing the top half may be Pastel White - looks identical to the bumpers if that's a clue? The bottom is hard to tell as it's a bit faded... hard to tell from faded paint on a crappy photo I know but suggestions/thoughts welcomed...

  16. Spent the afternoon fiddling about with the bus today. Mostly cleaning up the really grubby interior (floor to ceiling beige carpet so loads of hoovering), also preparing the left hand battery tray for a leisure battery (a clean up and and a coat of waxoyl, plus new battery terminals). Got a 110AH low profile battery off eBay for £56. Hope it fits, haven't checked yet!

Anyway, found something quite interesting when exploring, wasn't sure who did the conversion in the first place...

  18. Had a great morning, did the valve clearances on my bus for the first time. Despite less than 30 miles since the last service they were all over the place so glad I checked. Rubber gaskets were leaking too, so replaced with new cork. A couple of the adjusters were a bit stubborn / damaged so I will pick up some spares for the next service.

Took a break for lunch, and buoyed by my success decided to have a look at the points and do the timing. My afternoon was less good...

The points weren't opening to the specified .016in. I double checked with my newly acquired dwell meter (great!) and sure enough the angle was a bit higher than specified. So I took them out - they looked pretty new so I just put them back and adjusted them (fiddly!) then put a dab of grease on the cam, cleaned up the rotor arm contact, and put it all back together.

...After that the bus wouldn't start! I had enough time to check again before it got dark that the points were opening and closing properly, so my best guess is that in adjusting the points I've knocked the timing out of whack. If that's the case I'm surprised that it would be bad enough to stop it starting, maybe it was on the edge anyway? Maybe I've done something silly.

Any thoughts? I might have a look tomorrow morning before work if I manage to get up early enough.
