1600 Late bay engine tinware fitting

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by yorkieman, May 11, 2016.

  1. Anybody no of a good schematic or picture which shows the exact location for fitting of the full tin ware set up. I have the VW t2 parts catalogue which is very good as it shows the pieces but is not clear where they fit.

    Thanks

  2. Best to just follow your nose - if you've got all the bits, it's pretty self-evident once you get going. Cylinder tins first, then front tin near the flywheel, fan shroud,under-tin. Off you go...

  3. Got that far but, then appear to have 2 small rectangular tins with tabs on either side and a each tab is split by a slot haven't a clue about these or even if they fit the engine but, they are there.

  4. Got a pic? Might be the bits that go around the heat riser tubes from the exhaust (are the slots semicircular?), or the two pieces that attach under the front tin either side to make the cooling air "ducts".

  5. No they are not the heat riser ones, I still need to get a set of those they are these ones says barrel but where?

  7. They're the air dams that go under the cylinders, attached to the head studs. You'll need to take the heads off again to fit them. The engine will overheat without them.

    Oops. See Snotty's post. ^

  9. Damn shame that as I haven't had the heads off at all!

  10. We live and learn ;). Although...did your engine have them to start with? Hard to believe not.

They essentially block the downward airflow from the fan, forcing it to circulate around the cylinders before exiting out the back.

Maybe they are fitted and you have a spare pair?

  12. I'd suspect they're there already.
