112 to 205 wheel conversion

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Grum, Oct 10, 2014.

  1. Morning.

I'm looking at switching to the from small 5 to wide 5 wheels.
    Anyone here done so???
Fronts not a problem I'm just wondering what's involved with doing the rear.

    Cheers.

Don't quote me but could be as simple as removing old drum and hub and replacing with wide 5 drum (hub/drum is one piece). That's what my 68 is like.

Or get some adaptor plates from Butty's Bits.

When I did it the drums , stub axles backing plates and brakes were different, think early drums are deeper , stub axles longer and brakes are wider, was a while ago though prototype bay forum have a section about it ( I think)

  6. Was gonna give Butty a shout but I'm not sure of clearance on the rear arch.
I'll give him a call later.

Mine fit. Its close on the rear arches so you'll need to check your ET closely.

Cheers bud. So you've got the adaptors from Butty on the rear with those wheels???

I've got Butty's adaptors on the front, and unknown adaptors on the rear.
The rear ones are slightly thinner than the fronts though.
You'd need to check with Butty what the thinnest he can do is.

  11. generally this is not a very good conversion as you use countersunk screws to hold the adaptor plate on ,, adaptor plates are nasty at the best of times but when they`re as thin as you need here ,the word gash doesn`t even cover it ...... just my view

    Not always true.
    My wheels are fitted:
Wheel to adaptor using proper wheel nuts.
Adaptor to drum / disc using proper wheel nuts.
The adaptors are probably about 15mm thick, hardly flimsy.
Can't see the problem with that.
They've been on for at least 9 years without a problem.

  13. If you're using 68 bits the Drums and Backing Plates are different between pre March 68 and post March 68

  14. Which adapters are you going for on the front. Looked at Butts Bits and couldn't see a 112 to 205?

  15. he's going to get some made up :)

  16. I've seen one circular ones with slight inset on the back that seats the hub face.
If you do go for them, be good to see a photo.
