091 transmission in a 3-rib case.

  1. I am trying to find some simple information, but keep ending up in dead ends because most vw- related pages are US- oriented, and they discontinued the type1 engine and 3-rib gearbox for the bus in '75.

The early type transmissions are called 002, the case has 3 ribs
in 74 through 75 the case got 5 ribs, but internally stayed as a 002 gearbox

then in '76 they introduced the stronger 091 gearbox with a 6- rib case to accommodate the stronger engine.

this is where i hit a brick wall. WHAT about post '76 buses that came with 1600 engines and a 3-rib gearbox in the rest of the world??

my '78 came with a 3-rib case out of the factory. is this a 002 or 091 gearbox internally?

    Thank you.

  2. your 3 rib will have 002 internals like a early box but confusingly im sure when you look at etka for a replacement case for later 3 rib it's shown as discontinued and suggest a 6 rib case as a replacement

  3. are you sure?
don't know where this page was scanned from, but it seems to suggest otherwise. (scroll to the right to see)

I know for sure that 002 and 091 internals (gears) are interchangeable, so in theory VW could have put 091 gears in 3 rib cases, but since there is practically zero information about post '76 3-rib cases, i can't know for sure. I would have to look at the code stamped on my case, but it's not accessible right now.

another thing that rises suspicion is that the longer shaft starter motor allegedly only for the 091 bell housing is also used on 3-rib boxes after '76

also found this page selling a recon. 091 box, but the picture obviously shows a 3 ribbed case.

If this proves to be true, that might explain why Etka tells you to get the 091...

  5. post 76 boxes are still 002 boxes but use some parts from 091, intermediate gear housing is one.
