£2000 or finance?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by salad.dodger2, Jan 26, 2016.

  1. Looking to move on from VW as a daily driver. Had the Golf long enough, Audi before, as well as owning the Bus.

Thing is, can't decide if I should get the best daily for £2000 cash or maybe get finance on something newer/better ?
So many high mileage cars that I don't feel are worth the asking price.
But then how much for something with around 70-80k miles.

Either Volvo V70 D5 or BMW 530d estate. Or what do you reckon?

    Any advice welcome.

    Thanks

  2. A bit more info would be helpful, e.g :

how many miles do you do a year, are you bothered about buying something with a high insurance group, what space do you need.....

  3. I'd never get finance on a car tbh....if I couldn't afford a vehicle suited to my needs at the time, I'd stick with what I have, and save up...plenty of decent motors around the £2K mark....as Chad says, depends what you need it for....

  4. I had a Volvo V70 D5. Loved it!

Only got rid coz I was 25 and shouldn't have been driving a Volve estate. Hahaha.

The BMW was actually the other contender!

  5. Have you got a labrador? You can't buy a Volvo if you haven't.

    £2000 grand on a caaaaarrr!!!!!

Does the queen spend that much

Until this year I haven't had a car worth over 1k and never had any major issues, not had to fit a clutch eveeeerrr :)

Bought an Audi 80 tdi estate with 110k miles on sold it with 240,000 for double what I paid :) all I had done in 7 years was a cambelt

Was a £500 quid car with a years tax n mot when I bought it got £1k back, had an other since cos they are ace :)

Lots of cars and good ones out there for £2k, don't be it of by high miles, if they were unreliable they wouldn't reach high mile :)

  7. No more than 5000 miles per year.
Don't want to spend loads on insurance but I guess it'll be more than the golf.
Need to space for bikes, kayaks, fishing gear and work stuff like tools and materials.

    No Labrador.

  8. OH's car is almost dead so she's having the Golf. Either way we need another car but a good car.

  9. Had enough of older cars with higher miles. Newest car is a 2004 TDI, its nice but better suited for the OH's needs.
Just don't want another Golf, Audi 80 or 100, 406 estate or Saxo, E30, E36......

    Or another VAG really.

  10. a Honda Accord gets my vote.

After years buying cheap 2k ish cars of varying origins and then using the bus as a daily I decided to lease a brand new Juke 1.5D on 3year 30k miles, £175 per month, it does 50mpg the fuel saving alone just about covers the monthly cost, zero road tax, no MOTs service once a year just paid £86, anything goes wrong it ain't my problem, no brainer for me.

  12. That sounds inviting. What lease company is that with? Wouldn't mind checking out what else they have.

All my 2nd hand cars have rinsed me in repair bills. Even well maintained cars I've known from new.

  13. E39 530d superb car 44mpg & strong perfomance, had a couple of these back in the day however very hard to find good unmolested/crashed/clocked one now.
Subaru Legacy or Forrester ? A bit thirsty 25 - 30 mpg but pretty bomb proof & you can still find FSH well looked after versions privately .
Alfa 156 Sportwagen bit of character & not as bad as they use to be if we'll looked after - but it is Italian !
Saab 9-3 Aero Estate cheap as chips now - parts still available 245 bhp fwd  if like a bit of torque steer!

  15. If you have /own business or are self employed then lease is good ,as its a tool for work etc etc . Depretiation is what kills new cars imo if its not a business vehicle.

After years of buying cars outright - oldish cars - we now lease , we might pay over the odds but the car we have now ( a seat and due to go back in March ) hasn't cost us penny except for fuel and the monthly payment £135.00 - free servicing etc

  18. I don't modify my cars as I have my Bus for that, so lease is probably a good thing. Tired of laying on my back working on Bus or fixing the daily. A hassle free lease would be great.

I'll be self employed so this could be an option??

I've only ever had one car that cost more than £450, never done a clutch, prob done 1 exhaust, 1 cam belt, the odd shock, tyres... That's 35 years of motoring. I'm not counting campers. Maybe that's why I like campers though as my cars don't seem to need any tinkering. I had to get a "new" rear hatch for my Volvo240 when the rust showering out of it got too much.

  20. Are you spying on us @snotty? I think another criteria to add into the mix is membership of the National Trust :D Think that completes our middle aged stereotype!
