Evening all! I've got a 1641 engine which goes like a train but smokes on deceleration, there's play in the guides and I was thinking of changing them. I've never done this before, always just changed the head, but these seem ok apart from the smoking so thought I might have a go. Has anyone done this? Is it worth bothering with or should I just get new heads? Cheers!
Only done my type 4 ones ...very easy ... Tap the bottom and screw in a bolt ,using suitable pin punch bash them out ... Warm head and I used a specially turned drift and drift new ones in ...make sure they go in square I then used new guides to cut seats ...
No ..I think stateside use precision sized balls to size them tho .. Mine were fine with new valves ....I cut a 3 angle valve Job whilst I was at it as well
I put them in the oven and stank the house out ..till they was just too hot to hold .i also put the guides in the freezer . I made the cutting tools to cut the seats as I never had any and being type 4 one is 8 mm one is 9 plus the inlet is 30 degrees against the 45 exhaust ......I did regrind the valves but replaced with new just to be safe
How hot can you get it whilst the wife is out? Joking aside If a stem is that worn it wobbles then the valve seats normaly at least need a regrind if not replacing
Just a warning, if you have the time get the old guides out before buying new guides. They could be oversized, a two of mine were
type 4 seats are quite big and mine were easily recut square to the guide ..... i`ll post a pic later of the pair of tools i made to cut them . i think 1mm is the maximum wobble the valves are allowed
0.8 on t1 engines according to the manuals. I haven't measured mine yet, but there doesn't seem to be that much movement, visible but not loads. What else could cause smoking? How can I tell if the rings are shot?
