horn and steering column.

  1. Answered my own question, thanks to Bentley

Mine is the column in the left so no bottom plastic seal as in the link.

Now just to figure out why my horn wire has got chewed up

  2. I recently had to re-do the horn wire at the steering coupling on my '79 Pick Up.
I figured it was easier to do it all from underneath - there is enough thread on the ends of the bolts to put another nut on, holding the ring connector in place. So just link together by this method two adjacent bolts (one that passes through the steering column flange to one that goes to the steering box).

  3. where is the wire attached to the other side of the bolt, looks like its caught on something...
it only needs to loop over tight to the bolt or it may catch, mine looked like it was going to so had to redo it. when you have redone it check it by going lock to lock on the steering.........

  4. Nice idea, will find some nuts and do a nice short run for it

  5. Looks like it has caught in something yes. It was a nice tight loop when I put it on but will do a better one next time

  6. The wire needs to loop across the coupler, so that earth continuity's maintained down to the steering box. Need to keep it out of the way of other stuff so it doesn't chafe as it goes round.

  7. ^^^Exactly that .
I just got peed off with the whole bloody thing and wired it into a switch on the dash ....

    :hattip:

  8. Noooo! Do you live in a caravan and tarmac driveways? Get the proper one fixed. You'll be in horn heaven.

  9. Some PO has done that with mine PITA to operate quickly.

  10. must do that with mine

It is possible to feed the wire through so that there is no loop of wire sticking outside the coupler . A real pain to do but it stays hidden inside.

Chop the huge yellow plastic insulation off and solder the ring on, make it much smaller

  13. From '74 onwards the steering column itself is the earth, rather than having a wire running through it, which the pre '74 Buses had. Therefore there is no wire to run through the centre of the coupling which I presume is what you are suggesting.

  14. Better still, use "proper" crimp-on eyelets.

  15. The huge yellow insulation was from proper crimps.

I have adjusted it all now and I think it should be OK now

How can any type of crimp be better than soldered? Especially in a situation where the join is under the bus and exposed to moisture!

  17. Horn wasn't working on mine when I got it. Welded a new female connector onto the bottom of the steering column then my wire snapped and I had to do a quick fix for mot last year. Switch in dash at the moment as I couldn't see how else to connect it but now I've seen vwed post. Got to fix the dash stereo cut out so will weld up the switch hole at the same time.
If the bus doesn't sell it'll be one of the first jobs on the list at the end of the season. :)
