my daily 2002 tdi golf has it's mot in 3 weeks it has a slight height difference front drivers side to passenger
parked on level ground the drivers side is 1.5cm lower than the passenger, i've checked and can't see a broken spring or any other noticable fault/damage - i'm queuing myself up for a fall here but other than "a fat bloke always sits on the drivers side and has worn it out" what could it be??

  2. it can only be a broken spring or a wrong spring on one side

yeah i thought so, must be a nice clean break then as i had 2 tyres yesterday and had a real good nosey while it was hanging at full stretch and couldn't see a thing.... hopefully the tester won't see it then.

  5. you can normally feel the jagged edge of a broken spring, even if it looks ok

i don't think they are handed, looking online they only list a spring for the golf diesel

  7. I go for the "fat bloke" hypothesis. Springs do get tired over the years.

yeah i'll have to have another check i guess, to be fair i'm probably gonna chuck it in for a fix sheet and if it passes bonus i guess.

  9. wrong spring as in one for a different model of golf etc

in fairness they look tired and old all round, in an ideal world i'd like a new set but there's never the money when you run a junker.

ha! to be fair a quick e-bay can get new ones at £17.90 each delivered so if i was stripping out i'd just change them for that i guess..... i wish i could find some heavy duty ones though as the speed humps are really high by me and i'd like to pick it up an inch or so..... i presume tdi ones are gonna be the heaviest duty they make? that said i guess new ones will probably raise even the higher side as they are looking tired.

  16. can you not just sit in passenger side whilst mot is being done ??

  17. Put heavy duty springs on the drivers side...:D

joking aside i can't find heavy duty springs, i think the tdi are as "heavy" as they get? if i had a 1.4 i presume fitting tdi ones would raise it but i can't see anything heavier than a tdi as i guess the v6 ones would be lower...

  19. Fat bloke theory is correct, I've had a number of cars like that. Take a look at T4 Westy's they all lean to the right too because of the cupboard weights.

mmmm interesting, it does go with my theory earlier that i couldn't see a broken spring.... think i'll wait to see if it fails and the mot man has better eyes than me, it doesn't overly worry me although i suppose with my "safety" head on it wouldn't pull up true if i stood on the brakes? maybe lef's swap em over isn't so silly...... (apart from they're that cheap that if you're gonna go to the effort to strip down you may as well swap out)
