Best place to but new ICTs??

  1. Hi, I'm wanting to buy a pair of Webber 34 ICTs for my van to replace the bloody awful single progressive 32/36 Webber that came with it.

Can anybody recomend a supplier that will re-jet the ICTs to about what I'd need for my 1700 Type 4 motor? I seem to think that usually they are supplied over jetted, or is that not correct?
I will still get the set up checked on a rolling road, but a decent starting point would be useful.

    Cheers, D

  2. Had mine from euro carb very helpfull came jetted as they ask your engine size ect !! I would recomend rolling road after !!

  3. Thanks for the replys. Happy to buy from VW Heritage, never had any issues with stuff from there before. I was just under the impression (wrong it would seem) that the jetting was a long way out as supplied. If I can do a basic set up, fit and get the thing running reasonably I'll happily settle for that and get the fine tuning done on a rolling road. I was planning to fit a balance pipe as well, had these carbs before on a different van.

CB Performance twin port manifolds for ICT's are MUCH better designed than the Empi ones. The empi ones have bosses to drill out for balance pipe fittings that if you use foul the HT leads. Elsewhere they are pretty thin for a fitting. The CB ones are pre-drilled in a sensible place even though the drillings/fittings are a bit small IMO. Easily remedied though and far better end result as you can easily get at your plugs.

My CB Performance ICT manifolds for the type 4 are drilled 1/4BSP, sat at the side of me now :D Very well made though, as you say much better than EMPI!

  6. I would go for the CB performance kit. Also worth considering the CSP linkage kit as it is soooo much better than the awful Empi one. Make sure you buy Weber carbs not empi ones. Much more money but also consider Dellorto DRLA36's

  7. I have a CSP hex bar on my bus and have been pretty impressed!

  8. Went with the CB performance ICT kit in the end. Looks to be all good quality, especially the intake manifolds as Mork says. Unlike most I've seen it has decent air filters too. Plan to fit this weekend so here's hoping all of the kit is as good as it looks.
Thanks to all for the advice.

  9. I've been doing a bit of research lately into alternate carb set ups for VWs (the T1 in my bus in particular) and the general consensus seems to be that if you are going to ditch the stock central Solex, then bypass dual-single barrel carbs (Kadrons/34ICTs, etc.) and go straight to dual-double barrel carbs. A pair of 36IDFs or 40DRLAs, with appropriate venturies & jetted accordingly, I understand, are a good match for a 1.6/1.7 motor (also, a single, central IDF or DRLA is also a poor option).

That said, an internal combustion engine is basically an air pump. A carb upgrade will improve the flow of fuel/air into the motor, but unless the flow of exhaust out is also improved, you will be limiting the benefits realised from fitting larger carbs.

Having said that...a long time ago I fitted a pair of 34ICTs (the CB kit, IIRC) to my kit car (anoth 1.6 T1 motor) and they have performed well ever since. I did get then professionally (at Red Line in Iver, Bucks) and, of course, I have no idea if a pair of IDFs would have been better, but they were certainly better than the single progressive the motor had originally!

    cheers

  10. Just an update after fitting the ICT's. Pleased to report the van runs much better as expected, it even ticks over ALL the time now. The CB Performance kit seems pretty good and overall I'd say I was happy with it. The linkage needs a little fettling to fit properly, couple of bolts too long, that sort of thing but nothing major. The one bit I wasn't impressed with was the replacement throttle arms. The rectangular slot in them that locates on the throttle spindle is oversized resulting in some 'slop' inthe linkage movement, that when you try and adjust out produces a high tickover every noe and them. Short term extra throttle springs to really yank everything back seems to have solved things, but long term think I'll modify the original throttle arms.

It's quite normal to have to add springs.

  12. I replaced the springs with two of the Solex Pict 34-3 springs

  13. Ah cheers, always good to know it's not just me. Still reveling in the pleasure of driving a van that doesn't splutter, cough and fart for the first 10 miles or so and then still refuses to tick over for more than 30 seconds. It used to take 10 minutes of the engine running before the intakes even started to get warm with the previous centre mount progressive. A very nasty bit of kit for a Type 4 motor.

  14. And a complete set of new jets ;)

  15. As Paul says make sure you check the jets etc they arrive with as I got a pair of Webber 34 ICTs in a kit from JK a few months ago and getting the correct jets for the 2000c type 4 is going to cost me another £60!!! I also know someone who bought the same carbs direct from Eurocarb and even though he told them his engine size etc he got the incorrect jets too

  16. I'm sure the jetting is wrong, smells rich. Didn't really expect it to be right, especially as mine is the 1700 motor. Now the thing is driveable in traffic I'll get it rolling road tuned as soon as possible.
I'm wanting to get a carb balancer but unsure which to go for, would appreciate advice from those that have them. Are the cheapo Gunsen ones any use, seem them mentioned on a few threads and good things said. Or would I be better spending more (usually the case!) and getting one of the snail type balancers.
    Cheers, D

  17. It is always the same. Also you will really not know until it gets on a rolling road. Kerchiiiiing, even more expense. It is a nightmare.

  18. Pull out the jets, and the emulsion tube, and make a note of what's in there... Emulsion tubes will probably be F22s or F78s... From what research I've done, the F78s definitely won't work... The F22s might, but you'd be better off with an F6
