"Big Tuna" Restoration. A Type 2 Westy with the Type 4 2lt lump

  1. So I have been on here for a while.

Recommissioning my bus after years of standing still under the previous owner and just keeping her ticking along so I could do a tour or two around the UK and camping trips with @1973daisey. But now, after doing essential lower 6 inch work, it's time to really start getting stuck in and restoring her properly. Pics up soon of work done to date and then more recent pics to follow. Bring on the welding spatter.

  2. Before I start posting pics up of the rolling resto I took my bus to be MOTd yesterday and it failed on the following:

Change the bulb and pressurise the washer bottle. Easy.

The rear brakes though require work. On the face of it it seems like just adjustments needed.

However on top of what has been noted on the sheet, I get a notchy feel through the pedal like I have to push past a 'lip' before it continues travel. @1973daisey is popping over later and we will have it apart tonight but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the sheet and the notchiness. The hoses look like they are the originals and seen better days so will replace those in any case.

  3. I'd say most likely needs adjustment, but it might be worth you taking the drum off, having a good look and changing the shoes .....you might have a spring or two broken, seized adjusters, seized cylinders, worn leavers etc.

adjusting - jack up the rear wheels, turn the star adjusters so the shoes just 'catch' the wheel as it turns, then back off slightly ....do this both sides, then with the hand break on (think it is no more than 7 clicks? ...says in the manual) tighten up the cable evenly with the 2 nuts at the front of the van, until the cable sounds like the 'g' string of a guitar when you twang it :D

....think that should get you near where you need to be

if the rear breaks arnt adjusted, your break pedal wont be as effective either

  4. That's 196 Hz...never though a guitar tune would be an essential piece of VW tune up equipment...:surprise:

  5. TBH that's the 'note' I use on my MGB ....German vehicles might use a different note :D

Brings a whole new meaning to taking your car to the garage for a 'tune up'.

  7. Cheers chaps. Sounds just like my Beetle then in terms of adjustment. Will get the drums off and check for clean movement too

  8. Ok @1973daisey came over and we changed the brake pipes today as they looked almost original. Inspected the rear brake internals, cleaned them, deglazed the drum and shoes and bled the system. Pedal much better. Reset the handbrake so it actually works. All feels much better now. I may have uneven wear on the OS shoes as they catch slightly. Hopefully they will 'round' off.

Sorted the brake lights and washer bottle. All booked in for retest tomorrow.

I suspect it was these causing the notchiness which the MOT chap agreed thats where he would have gone first

  11. Isn't it annoying when they mis-key the kilometres wrong? Looks like its gone from 178k to 129k to 180k. Should be a '7' not a '2'!
