Steering rack conversion

So my steering is rubbish, I know I need to put a new steering box on as mine has play on the input shaft with no movement on the output, until it gets to a certain point and then it does move.

Anyway, before I put one on, is there anyone that is actually doing a steering rack conversion? Other than getting a full (and expensive) red 9 design beam I can't find one anywhere.

I really think it would make a big difference in road handling and driveability

Certainly seems to be a gap in the market to me?

I too would be interested in on 'off the shelf' decent rack conversion & there appears to be a massive gap in the market for one.

think the CE design still has shortcomings.

Fellows were working on one but haven;t heard that it's ready for the market as yet.

very surprised that Simon from red9Design has not done one.

 

I believe Litesteer are putting EPAS + rack into Brazillian bays and just about anything else... You might find, unless your box is really shot, that just EPAS will take out the wandering effect....

 

Lots of people have tried, but nobody has come up with the simple solution needed to keep the price reasonable.
I thought Fellows had given up on the idea after @Baysearcher 's one?

yep been doing that for the last couple of years, the screw is almost all the way in now. i should probably just put the spare box on i have but am procrastinating as usual, maybe ill hold off til techenders

 

I expect you know that they are only tight in the straight ahead position and perhaps 1/8 steering wheel turn either side. It's therefore essential that the drag link is adjusted so that wheels straight ahead is at the centre of the box's range.

 

That doesn't sound good. Most late bay boxes are in good nick so a replacement isn't too big a gamble. It's the idler bit I'd like rid of.

so on a replacement box how do you know where the centre is when you fit it? does that make sense

 

Once fitted and connected to the steering wheel only, count turns lock to lock, then turn it to half way between.
Wheels straight ahead, adjust drag link length so the ball joint will slide into place without moving the steering wheel from it's centred position.
That's it. It your steering wheel is now on the cock, take it off and put it back on straight.

 

Turn it hard either way and mark the mid point

 

You can use the pointer on the dust seal, as said above just count the turns, halve and line the pointer up with the mark on the casing
