temperature sender

  1. Hi all
i have new AMC heads and i notice there is a threaded hole next to the intake manifold what is this for? i was thinking of getting temp sender to fit,has any one done this

  2. If they're generic heads, it's likely for the temp sender (thermistor) for fuel injection. My boggo 1600 Autolinea heads have one as well.

You could use it to measure head temp, but it wouldn't be as straightforward as just connecting it to a gauge: you'd have to scale it first, I'd imagine, so would need a bit of electronics in between.

    it's for the Ts2 switch on a f.i engine

  4. thanks all for the replies, i am going to investigate further, cant imagine it would be too hard to find a sender to fit, i dont like the dipstick ones and the sump plug ones will fail pretty quick hanging down there

  5. I`m with you on the dipstick but was looking at a sump temp sender - are they really prone to failure ??
Plan `B` was to look at a relief valve sender , i`ve heard about them but still need to have a nosey about longevity etc ...

    Any views ??

  6. I've found the dipstick sender to be fine. The sump sender may distort your strainer plate.

  7. I had a relief valve one for about a year before I sold the van. Sump one briefly before that. Sump plug one seemed to do the opposite of what you expect in so much that temps showed low when tanking along then rose when you came to a halt idling. Relief one was better. The sender is pricey unless you search around a bit got mine off a US seller.

And the third option which works well is the dipstick sender. No leccy bits hanging below the engine to get taken out when you drive over e g a pheasant.

  9. Fixed!

I'd go with dipstick every time - it's painless.

  10. My sump sender has been there for 3 years without issue.

  11. That's how it should be. Most efficient cooling is around 3000rpm where the fan is most efficient combined with external airflow over engine.

  12. For what it's worth, I bought a Porsche taco plate from the USA to fit a sender where VW/Porsche apparently designed one to go. It's got a stack gauge and sender fitted and has been no bother at all. Interestingly the plate positions the sender so it's basically at the point of the bottom of the dipstick. My simple logic says that a) there is no reason a sump mounted one should fail, mine hasn't,, and b) there appears to be not much wrong with temperature measurement at the dipstick.

  13. If you want a proper oil temp gauge and also want to use your dipstick but don't like the idea of drilling your engine or having something sticking out of your sump, then use a sandwich plate, fits between the oil filter and the housing, about £10 on fleabay and comes ready tapped with a 1/8 npt hole or four!
    Comme ca...........

  14. I tried a sandwich plate first time round but really struggled to get a proper seal as the ones I found used two big O rings and were not an ideal fit on the oil filter housing. After loads of oil leaks I abandoned the idea and went 914 taco

  15. Dipstick!

  16. This being the season of goodwill an` all - i am truly horrified by your hurtful comments ...
