Roof repair - any pointers?

  1. mines the same but i have just cleaned it up, filled, sanded, primed and painted and its lasted two years. needs doing again now so for the sake of an afternoons graft i'll stick with that.

  2. See that's what I considered doing it I fear it's already been done once and a few people said that was what to do if you're fixing it to sell.... Otherwise chop it out and weld in new metal lol

  3. If you're not selling it - whats the problem.! I have had some professional work done this week as the door runner and seal needed to be replaced but I paid someone to do that :)

  4. I fear it goes deeper than the surface. I've taken a couple of better pics of the worst areas to upload. There are a couple of splits in the skin and I could poke through it without too much difficulty. I've had a minor drip on the sliding door runner at the handle end for a while, which seems to be from rainwater running down the top of the slider rail from the roof channel so it's deffo leaking water into the bus

  5. Just seen this thread. That is an amazing piece of panel manufacturing.

  6. You're a wizard, you can do it. But, I'm starting to believe if it's worth doing, why not do it right! and only have to do it once .

Well that's the worst bits in a bit more detail, and here's a bonus track..... Windscreen surround lol

  8. You've got this. No prob. Just a bit at a time. Slow and steady. You'll be done them in no time.

I spy a repair like above has already been fitted. You need to clear the paint and carp off to see what's what. You may find there are less holes in the roof behind the repair panel than in the repair panel! Or not. :(

And that looks like it has had a front panel, the joint has been welded with very poor penetration then ground down until there was just a sliver of seel where the weld was supposed to be joining it, which susequently split. You'll possibly get away with cleaning it up and welding it properly. :)

  11. I carried out some roof repairs to my van this year. I originally bought some repair strips and corner gutters from Schofields but when I started to remove the rust I found that it was worse than I originally thought and changed my mind and got a rear roof cut from fbivw.
The problem I found was that it appears that the roof actually rots from the inside out so the roof framework was found to be rotted to a worse condition than the roof skin itself.

There are some pictures of how I tackled my repairs in the link below.

  12. In my experience, the old adage 'it's always worse than it looks' is nowhere more true than when dealing with roof rot.
It often seems to come through from inside, the frame rusts and because the outer skin sits close to the frame, flakes of rust sit between them and it rusts through.
I wonder if it's linked to condensation from camping?

Hi unfortunately I didnt go any further. Im kinda surprised that Preservation panels havent taken the oppertunity to make them up.. there are currently no parts available for that repair and it appears to be a common rust area....

I might ask Fintan if he would consider making them.. In the meantime I could probably make a pair up for you if you can wait a week or so.. ? remember though they are one offs and will most liely need a wee tweek to fit, nothing to bad though..and cheeper than a roof cut ... :)

  15. if you could mate, I'd. Have your arm off for them! Lol tweeks I'm used to, with the aftermarket stuff I've had so far I'm getting to be a dab hand at it :)

  16. I know my post above was last year, but i just filled and got back on with life, but would love some if you ever do get round to making some up...Dave

  17. @Luis Navarro did you ever dig deeper into the roof rust the see exactly whats underneath? Any pics?

  18. yeah the supporting frame section needs a bit of love in places too, but its the outer skin that's the main issue as there's a few holes and a lot of perforation to be addressed
