ignition switch

  1. Want to fit my new ignition switch which has been gathering dust. According to the bentley book i need to drill out a bolt to dismantle everything, is this correct? is there an easier way to dismantle it all?

Depends on the age. On mine built oct 1973 there was a magic grubscrew YOU MUST NOT LOSE. Mine tried hard to vanish but I found it twice.

  3. Cheers guys, mine is a 79. If there's stuff to lose, I will lose it

  4. It's different on a late bay, you only need to drill if you're swapping the barrel, not the switch. You need to remove the shear bolt, slide the column out of the housing, then remove the screw which holds the switch in place.

  5. I dropped said grub screw in my workshop (my drive) but did find it again !!

It's easier than it sounds, the bolt thst needs drilling is in an easily accessible place to :)

  7. So I does or doesn't need to drill the shear bolt? ( just replacing switch. wtf is a shear bolt, wossit look like?!)

Do I have to disconnect steering underneath if I'm to remove it from column ?

Soz for being a window licker :p

  9. Just the electric switch babes

  10. It's easier with the column out of the van, but you can do it by disconnecting the part that connects the column to the dash. The shear bolt is visible through the plastic housing, about level with your knees. It looks like the top of a volcano(well, sort of;)) a cone with a hole in it. The idea is that it's tightened at the factory and the bolt shears off making it difficult for thieves to disable the steering lock. To get it undone use a chisel, it's not done up that tight.

  11. Strewth, one of those jobs I (foolishly) thought was a five minute jobbie with minimal effort / tool use!

You don't need to pull the column, undo the steering wheel take it off, undo the 4 screws you can see and pull the wires out of the bottom of the column, you will then be able to pull the 2 stalks out and the top half of the plastic housing, look into the front of the housing from the seat and through the round hole in the plastic housing you will be able to see the shear bolt( though 9 out of 10 times it's been replaced with an Allen key bolt) undo the Allen key bolt , if it's a shear bolt, drill a hole into it 6 mm the bang an Allen key in there and undo it, then get your head under the column, there are 2 Phillips screws undo them and the plastic housing will come loose, then put they key in the ignition tturn it to diss engage the steering lock then pull the whole lot off , turn it upside down undo the Phillips screw and the plastic bit will come out , refitting is reverse of removal ;)

  19. right i started this yesterday, stripped it all out, today ive stuck in the new ign switch.
im doing this to try and fix the dodgy starting issue - sometimes it starts fine on the key, sometimes its dead (ign lights come on but no noise or starting action whatsoever) i have the hotwire installed direct from starter to battery which will start it every time if i touch the wire to batt +. p

so before i put it all the steering gubbins back together thought id test it to see if the new switch had cured it but it hasnt. same story - ign lights come on, but dead. hotwire still works though, turns it over fine.

so now ive wasted my time doing the switch and it hasnt worked whats my next step?

    cheers
