How do you put up a Devon bed?

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Millie, Oct 8, 2014.

  1. I just can't work it out! I think there must be little bits missing. There's nothing for the end piece (nearest the front) to rest on (apart from 2 legs). This is the middle piece of the bed.

Is something meant to fit in the little recesses?

I'm guessing there's meant to be drawers in these gaps. Does part of the bed rest on them?

Also, what are these little channels for?

I'd very much appreciate it if anybody has a photo of theirs set up, as I'll be sleeping diagonally on 2/3rds of it if not!

  2. Doesn't look like our Devon bed did

  3. Well, I had a rather cramped weekend sleeping in my stumpy bed. Can anyone please tell me how the 3 parts fit together and what they rest on. I don't want to have to resort to a double leg amputation.

  5. Thank you @matty, lots of interesting info there. Unfortunately it doesn't actually show how the boards fix together. And add to that apparently I can have a low level bed as well, using the table and cooker top maybe, so I'm even more confused!

Ask the previous owner? Might be a bodge or maybe they never went camping and parts are missing?

I like page 19 of the instruction booklet. “…any gas leak can cause a complete, and sometimes permanent, loss of appetite.”

  9. looks like an old one for sure.....they should have drawers (if memory serves) accessible from both inside and the tailgate end....the bedboards on older devon usually just rest on timber battens fixed to other furniture (buddy seat/ cooker cabinet etc.)...will try to find a pic

not exactly the same as yours, but early Devon(esque)...look at the buddy seat in the pic....thin batten holds the bedboard up, and there may also be a leg support for the other side...depends on the conversion....think you'll need to improvise

I'm guessing the channels are to locate the bedboard so it sits flush with something else....

  11. Yeah I asked the previous owner @zed, (after I was home so he couldn't show me). He said the bed should have a metal slide piece either side but thinks one was missing so used to put a screw in either side to hold it together. But I can't actually picture what he means!

Thanks for the link @vanorak, the photo of the bed set up is the low level one. I don't think I've got enough pieces to make one of those. I've only got the small table and cooker top. But there are little ledges on the edge of the long seat and small facing seat, so it looks like you could've made a low level bed at some point, but the bed I'm trying to work out is higher and goes all the way to the back.

Yep, I've seen some photos of the front and back drawers, I'll get some made.

I just need a photo of the bed without the cushions on but google won't give me one!

  12. I got all excited then @vanorak! But alas it's a different sort of bed. Mines a lot higher and slides out rather than flip over. And the drawers are collection only unfortunately. But top marks for effort, thank you.

  13. thought it would give you an idea of how the seat combines with other furniture....

  15. Yep, I read that, it's pretty useful thanks. But it doesn't show how the 1st and 2nd boards hold together. I think maybe it's missing some clips or something to stop the end board just sliding off. Or maybe they just overlap by a couple of inches and I'm making something really simple more complicated. But then those 2 recesses are there for something
