Fuel leak

  1. Been away for the week and filled my van up several times. However, on the way to eastnor I topped her up one last time. When I got to the show I realised there was a strong smell of petrol. First tracked to the near side battery tray but after removing the fire wall and having a feel around it appears to be seeping up through the sender unit. I mopped it up but it was back there after 10 mins. Felt all round and it appears dry. Just sitting in the sender. Drained some fuel off and all was fine.
Suggestions please, is it possible it's coming up through the contacts on the sender unit.

yes it's possible although there's a cork gasket under the sender that's probably the culprit.

  3. Its only been in there 3 months

  4. That's explains it. It probably didn't seal properly.

  5. Buy I would have thought it would have leaked before if it was the seal. The tank is also dry around the sender so how would it leak up and over the rim to sit in the sender unit.

I suppose the engine Is going to gave to come out to fix it :(

  6. Ah, I see what you mean now. Maybe it could seep up through the sender, they are fairly Marmitee the new ones, or it could be that the breather pipe connections are leaking and fuel is dripping onto the sender?
Whatever the reason, it needs sorting. :)

  7. Well I think I might have solved a bit of the problem. The only bit of rubber connector I didn't renew on the breather pipes has perished above the left hand battery tray, hence why it was running there when full. Doesn't explains why it was sitting in the sender unit but that's all dry now.

However the smell of petrol hasn't gone and I've now noticed petrol dripping from the left hand carb. Any ideas and is it an easy fix. It's an 1800 type 4. Suppose it's going to be easier than the proposed engine removal for the sender unit that I thought had to be changed.

    Cheers

  8. Clamped the fuel pipe and stopped the leak last week. Changed the gasket that I thought was the problem tonight. Started engine and all was fine. Stopped engine and petrol started seeping from the carb again. Noticed the same on the other carb but only very slight

I have quite a steep drive, with the van facing up hill. I've turned her round to face the other way and it's stopped.

Any ideas, except for the obvious "just park facing down hill" lol.

    Thanks in anticipation

  9. It's the fuel pump at fault. Gravity second. Check your sump isn't full if fuel, I guess it will be. You need to sort this or you're going to trash your engine as petrol isn't a great lubricant
    :)

  10. Just took oil filler cap off and slight whiff of petrol..or was I just being paranoid lol.

Is it as simple as changing fuel pump?

Cheers for the reply. I was tempted to take her out today but think she will have to stop behind.. Train for me

I think that you can change the fuel tank sender without taking out a T4 engine.
If the carbs leak fuel, the leak is inside the carbs, so they will need looking at.
Fuel needle valves in the float chambers or sinking floats.
And if the carbs are not the originals but an upgrade then fuel pressure may need checking as the stock pump may pump too high pressure.
