Rough running

  1. Off to the south coast today for a week......... The van is a 2.0 type 4. It's runs ok on a trip but yesterday after 8 miles it's lost power petered out, the engine kept running just ran rough, I could still crawl along. Stopped for a couple of min. Then went ok for 8 miles then same thing again.
I had the carbs off and cleaned them out last weekend. New plugs, fuel filter. Will throw a new cap leads and rotor on this morning as have new spares. Want to do loads of miles this weekend / week :-(
It has a pertronix ignition fitted with vacuum advance dizy. All hoses are good and on tight. Seems like there is no air leaks. Anyone had the same?

    1973daisey likes this.
  2. There was a similar thread I seen to this last week I seen not sure what the out come was ,I remember zed asking if the carb spacers was fitted as I made this mistake once !! I'll have a look

  3. Is the fuel pump filling the float bowls in the carbs?

  4. Fuel bowls full, float level ok. Spacers fitted. I did 200 miles one day and it was fine next morning it did it. I did think it was a choke problem but it does it hot or cold and I checked the chokes hot or cold engine running and they were fully off.

    kev

    Dirty fuel filter

  6. Got a new one on it last week. Still looks great.
I am wondering if it's the coil.
It's a Bosch blue one but been on since 2003

  7. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Loose connection on carb fuel cut-off solenoid?
If coil, you wouldn't have made the 200 mile journey you said?

  8. Checked the solenoids last night. Clean and tight terminals. When pulled off each one worked and killed fuel. It felt fuel but it's not consistent. One min pull great then it just died out the flat out again. I thought something in tank as never had it out but can't do it before the trip

  9. Mine was the voltage reg on the firewall slowly giving up. Did exactly the same as yours. Finally found it by checking connections and burning my fingers. About £20 to replace and a big smile on my face.

  10. I will take a look as not sure if the alternator on mine is internally regulated but would make sense as have two batteries and not long started using and charging the second

  11. Sounds like it could be overheating to me. As above though, if you don't have fully charged batteries your electronic ignition won't work but that usually manifests itself with it shutting down, not slowing down. Voltage reg is external, normally it's on the back of the firewall. Is your battery light glowing?
    :)

  12. Battery light is ok. Voltage on gauge is ok but need to check with meter.
I will grab a regulator just in case

  13. It's very unlikely that is the problem, and as I say, you don't get intermittent issues with electronic ignition, it works or it doesn't.
    :)

  14. Fuel pump giving up once warm?
I'm sure this has happened on another thread.
I have a leccy one you can borrow, if you can swing past my house.

  15. Is it an electric fuel pump or original mechanical one?

  16. It's a mechanical fuel pump.
Cheers for the offer tbr. Will take you up on it if it looks like the pump. Daughter was ill when I picked her up today so postponing till Monday so more time to get it sorted :)

  17. Same thing on same engine, brand new filter was blocked, swap it out

  18. There's a gauze filter inside the Mech fuel pump, big brass nut and it's underneath this.

  19. Awesome I will take a look :)

  20. Fitted new fuel pump and it runs like €#*$ if you pull throttle open fast it will rev but if opens slowly it runs like a bag of bolts. Backfiring and missing.
It's had new cap. Rotor plugs coil. Carbs been off and cleaned replaced fuel filter and pump. Abandoned taking it on holiday as so grumpy. Tools video
