Techenders: 26th - 28th April 2024. Who’s coming?

  1. Spoke to the local garage that fitted the seal. We are going for a replacement flywheel. Arrived ok and the oil leak is more of a weep.

You know when it's bad because the back of your bus is evenly splattered with oil.
When it's really bad (well, you have to get home!) you may see the driver behind failing to clear his windscreen, flashing his lights and shaking his fist.
Don't ask me how I know.

    Have you used them?
I have once on a torque convertor. It worked but when I think of these/flywheel my initial reaction is "tricky". I can't remember why for sure, but I think I couldn't find one shallow enough that you wouldn't have to cut it down before or after fitting. The material is hard enough to blunt most tools.
I also saw this on the web, looks like they had to cut one down and it looks a bit rough to me despite being done by an apparently fussy person. That stuff is hard though. I added the blow-ups.

I'm impressed that you have a photo!
It doesn't look bad but that's after he's cleaned it up and the photo isn't great.
It doesn't look beyond use though I have to say (guess), so not surprising he persevered with it.

  11. When the seal was set flush, the oil dripped after just a few miles. When pushed all the way in, it was still dry for much longer. I had the same issue about 5 years ago and another garage did set it a few mm in to fix and it lasted well. They did say that the end float that I had was ok. Will ask @davidoft for his opinion tomorrow.

Pushed right in is my opinion, otherwise why the shoulder in the case? It's an age old thing - some say push flush with outer - I suspect they may had had success that way by avoiding a small groove but that doesn't make it correct. Let the arguement discussion begin!
For you of course - you've already tried both ways.

That flywheel doesn’t look bad at all; I’d be looking closely at the OD of the seal, especially at the casing split line, and the ‘O’ ring in the flywheel. A smear of sealant just on the split line is worth doing.

I haven’t used them personally but I know they work on shaft seals. The radius on the flywheel snout could be a problem and it looks like new Type 1 flywheels are pretty cheap so probably not worth messing about with a sleeve. But the existing flywheel doesn’t look bad to me – it’s as good as the one I’m using.

can I use your pizza oven please? My van has no facilities whatsoever (apart from the bed) . Is the Aldi pizza base cooked or uncooked? :)
