Make sure the bolts are not pulling out the side of the gearbox, the ones that hold the clutch cable as happened to @paulcalf I think
had that bracket off and all good . I fitted the shorter 68 LHD cable today, and if you ask me , thats the correct one . Pedal is perfect , free play at gearbox is 1/2 inch and still well over an inch of adjustment on the thread.. definitely a proper working pedal now .
