Narrowed beams talk to me

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grandmst, Mar 28, 2020.

  1. So I'm not to happy with the way my bus sits.

Standard beam, drop spindles and gas burners.

Up front they sit to close to the lip of the arch.

I've been looking at a Transporterhaus 3" beam because I've been told (Remember anything over a 3” will need the lower trailing arms narrowing too)

I'm just wanting to bring the front down a little more and pull the wheels in closer so they are not directly under the arch.

Never ran a narrowed beam before, any insight would be helpful

    Thanks all

  4. Fitted Transporterhaus lowered beam and the top grease nipples were inaccessible had to drill new ones. Apart from that great built kit. Have narrowed beam on our beetle but its from Limebug nowhere near as good a quality and reduces turning circle.....

  7. Yes that’s it only thing I don’t like about it is the boss inside is aluminium with a steel bolt in and easy to over tighten and strip ask me how I know

  8. The threaded pin holding the adjuster at the desired angle can also break, the entire weight of the front of the vehicle is on those two M10 bolts. Ask me how I know:rolleyes: happened on the Bug. Bus ones are unlikely to be a different design, are they?

  10. dropped spindles increase the track. gas burners are a really low offset so they also increase your track (i think they are something like ET12 which is nuts) so both of those factors are pushing your tyre closer to the arch metal work. not good.

vintage autohause (french slammer) beams area available fully built with either -8cm or -11cm width. do the maths - if you want to get back to stock width track at the front, the -8cm beam will be close. post here what your wheel et and spindle measurements are and i'll help you work it out.

on my bus i have -8cm FS beam, with dropped spindles and wider front wheels (7x16 ET30). overall effect is i'm only 5mm front track narrower than stock. no rubbing ,looks great, no need for tubs, have correctly load rated tyres etc.

  11. i don't think there are many beams/adjusters that work like that now - everyone i've seen has serrated connectors and a very significant set of bolts holding stuff together. the weight is held by the overlap of the serrated sections, not the bolts.

i'd never put my family in something i didn't think was safe.

quick google and best pic i could find is t2d:

  12. Yep, different design to the one on the Bug, to be fair it's a lot lighter vehicle.

  16. That's what all the essentials includes.

Not going that low to be fair probably only one click for now untill in can get some new shocks.
