I'm guessing that members of this fair Parish will remember this track. Back in 1987 when it was first released, it was by a band called 'SOMEONE/THING And the Ru Ru Scene'. This was swiftly abbreviated to MARRS, and over the subsequent 32 years, I've forgotten what that first name/word was. I searched on the googles where it now claims that MARRS was in fact an acronym for the band members names? Martyn Young (from Colourbox), Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala (from A.R. Kane), Russell Smith (an associate A.R. Kane member and founder of Terminal Cheesecake), and Steve Young (from Colourbox). I think the googles are trying to re-write history and I am a little bit scared of them.
I only ever remember it as being by MARRS. although I think you must have got the dates wrong coz I remember it from my youth and I’m just a youngun
From the Wiki's; 'The two tracks were released to United Kingdom dance clubs in July 1987, on an anonymous white label with no artist credit. "Pump Up the Volume" proved to be the more popular side and was the track more heavily promoted. 4AD released the 12" single (as, officially, a double A-side)[3] on 24 August of that year. It entered the UK Singles Chart the following week at number 35, a strong initial showing for an unknown act, especially with 12" sales. However, what gave "Pump Up the Volume" its commercial edge was the remix released a week later. This remix became the best-known version of the track'.
Kick ass track. Mum and dad hated my Motorhead but the look of utter incomprehension with PUV was a picture. Strangely they got Buffalo Girls.
Dear Sir, Harrumph and Pshaw, I say about this modern music. Signed in contempt, Archibald Fortesque Smyth Colonel ( Ret ). Queens Own 51st Foot and Mouth Deserters.
The track was created by 4AD and Colourbox - the most indepth info I can find at the mo' is here https://www.soundonsound.com/people/marrs-pump-volume
