Went out to the camper this morning started ok, I put it in gear and it's stuck, I think the rear brakes are stuck on shall I just give it some Welly or should I jack it up and wake the rear drums with a club hammer, flipping thing don't you just hate these rusty old vehicles
If you jack back up on trolly jack ,stick a brick under front edge of wheel ,then drop the bus on it , that can give enough force to crack it off . Don’t park with hand brake on full in winter especially if it’s out in rain . Rusty rusty sticky sticky . If not you might have to take drum off or back off adjusters ? Good luck with your sticky ones .
I have learnt this lesson with back brakes stuck on, so my answer now is not to park up long term with hand brake on! I leave mine in gear and wheels chocked. Friend of mine had a tractor pull his bus to free them up when camping.
I had a similar problem, couldn't understand why it would start, go into drive but not move...I removed wheels and used a hammer....few hundred miles later my linings separated from the metal shoes....might be worth checking with drums off when you're safely home.
Thanks everyone with a clunk and a bang it freed itself , I'm going to take @IZZYBAY s advice and leave the handbrake off and leave it in first gear, thanks again TLB to the rescue again
I have a bay and an LT on the drive that both get driven occasionally. I only ever leave them with a brick as a stop and the brakes off!
Its not only Bays, I find with the Polo in wet weather the rear pads stick to the Disks, so as with the van, park on drive in reverse, handbrake off and brick under front wheel. Problem solved.
Remember that when you go to change the spark plugs ! As you remove the last one and it rolls off down the hill
Yep. Mine is parked on a steep driveway with the handbrake very firmly on. After a few days the drums often stick. Just a couple of inches in reverse and the brakes free up.
I had a Mk4 Cortina many years ago and thd clutch stuck to the flywheel while I was on holiday for a couple of weeks. Nothing we tried would free it off and in the end I had to take the gearbox out and lever it free with a couple of hefty screwdrivers.
