1800 heads have about 57cc combustion chambers, I had to open them up to 61cc to get 9.0:1 with 96mm flat top pistons and 1.55mm deck height (stroke is 80mm).

With 1800 heads and dished bus pistons you can’t get the CR high enough for a C25 cam but with flat top pistons and a good deck height you can’t get it low enough unless you increase the combustion chamber volume.

  2. Engine Drop

So finally got a window to to drop the engine... or more precisely gave up on waiting for a window and strapped some tarp to the roof rack

    Anyway engine dropped

    and in the garage now

  3. Engine ancillary removal.

Missing flaps. Another shopping list item.

    Plenty of red stuff

    On every mating surface

    Strang distributor with wobbly drive

And suspicious oil patch on cooler...

  4. Strip down long block

Bit oily in 1 and 2

Pistons , cracked fin, probably changing barrels anyway

Doesn't look like guides are helping and signs of blowing past gasket

Time for bed.. and an ebay trawl for an engine stand..

Shallow dish for the large combustion chambers.

  6. Chambers 3 and 4 uncovered.. also a bit oily , or very oily on 4..with a bit of head damage where somethings been dancing in the chamber!

Eagles eyed might notice slightly different exhaust valves on the exhaust so been worked on before.

Cylinders look a bit oily too, been blowing past top and bottom of cylinders

Even more eagle eyed might notice it's a different head to 1 & 2 from the combustion chamber shape...

    Poop!

  7. Bit of a wipe to get to the part number..

So that's a 2 ltr ... now to chose which way to go, bigger or smaller valves... bigger helps it breath, smaller supposed to help low down torque... I'll go restricting on chokes of carb and let it breathe hopefully the right choice

Anyone got an 41mm intake valve 1800 head spare? :)

  8. Quick progress update..

Flywheel seal looks to have been leaking past the seal... note: must check flywheel "snout"

Sides look to have been leaking from bottom of barrels more on the 3/4 side

The front looks really tidy.. almost new..but possibly just a quick blow of gold paint over the visible bits... no signs of pulley seal leak, possibly a little from bottom right of oil pump or oil filler stand/dipstick bellows area..

  9. Case Split

When you've taken out all the obvious ones, the six big M10 through bolts and the M8 perimeter nuts and bolts including the ones that were hidden behind the flywheel, and the smaller M6 ones fro the top of the breather tower... put them all in bags with labels on as youre going..

Go back and un-bury the oil pick up bolt - probably should have been one of the first!..

and then take the nut off the stud that comes through the case just in from to cylinder No4 that helps hold the case by the front cam bearing...

The case can them be cracked open the case.. I used a puller to push between chunky bits.. if it's not moving double-check for missed nuts / bolts before breaking your case.

Came apart nice and easy... don't think it's been together long..

  11. Measured bearing saddles

    Looks like it's a new case !

Apart from these bits found lying around the bottom...

Can't see where they might be from though...

  12. Another 1800 41mm valve head sourced from U.S. from Ebay arrived!

Threw some ground glass at it via a compressor.... half of each side do e to show effect..

Happy with that no cracks to be seen just a couple of studs missing both hole threads ok..

Home made blasting cabinet...couple of gauntlets taped onto holes ina £6 ASDA box..

Rusty old 2ltr con-rods next.. and crank.. before they go off to shop with the heads for work..(small ends on these and k-line the guides on the heads )

Any one need an 1800 crank and rod set looks to have had one re-grind from dims...

  14. More playing with the ground glass ....

Came out ok , so did all 4..

Then gave the crank a clean and measure up

Looks a little pitted on the bearing faces but wear not too bad hope a .25 re-grind should get them out., might as well do them all while it's there

  15. Ideally you should be using a micrometer, callipers are +\- 0.1mm on a good day

  16. Have a look for some second hand micrometers mate on fleabay. I picked a set of three up last year for about 30 quid.

  17. I'll have a look!.. but for these I think it's telling me it's time for a grind so I'll let the machine shop get it right.... 'spose I should check though...

  18. Crank rods and heads all off on their holiday down the machine shop so bath time for the case..

Then a quick hose down with Mrs Deefer valentines present... I'm good to her..

Got some isopropyl alcohol ordered to try and get the permatex off the case..

  19. Almost clean!..

Bit scuffed under all that sealant.. Will try to smooth it out a bit see it'll seal with just seals on. Almost got all the Permatex aviation gasket too off the case halves using perspex scraper and isopropyl alcahol..

  20. Crank Measure Up

Been a month of stuff going on two thought I'd better update..

Had a look at the main bearings..

In short measured the journals found they were a bit worn so went off for a 0.25mm grind.

Came back and measured up with proper micrometers

..found them to be possibly on the big side...

gave then all a good clean checked with plastiguage all pretty much same clearance

    ..which is ok

Doesn't seem to be same table for con rods but assumed similar
    should be ok...

Tried with single (as recomended in the instructions) and multiple strips of plastiguage.. didn't seem to make much difference to be honest..

Cleaned it all up tested in situ spins with no binding. Con rods did take a good polish and proper torque up to make them spin freely seemed to bind more before full tightening up but ok in the end
