Newbie. 1982 T25/T3 in Australia . . . need help.

Discussion in 'Introduce Yourselves' started by Gee Emm, Apr 19, 2019.

  1. Greetings from NSW, Australia. Vehicle is an `82 T25/T3. Aircooled 2litre, Injected, Manual. Type 4 CV Engine code.

I need a few engine parts that seem unprocurable here in Oz, though we do have Just Kampers, and I have had dealings with Campervan Culture. UK
Item ... small Micro Switch that sits atop Throttle Body
" ... PCV / Crank Case Breather that sits at rear top of engine.
    " ... Cold Start Valve/Injector.
" ... Alternator Air Duct ... the round one
" ... Timing Tab and Engine Induction Fan Cover mesh
" ... Black plastic `Pull Out' Oil filler pipe
" ADVICE please on what is a good brand conversion to make Dissy Electronic ie Pertronix, Accuspark etc.
" and, I MAY need a new Air Flow Meter ... not sure yet

. . . . and yes, the fire was pretty bad. The Points ignited a split Fuel Line right at the Cold Start Valve . . . bugger.
Many thanks for any assistance .. will seek suppliers in either Euro, UK, Sth Africa, USA . . . anyplace !

    Geoff. Lake Macquarie, NSW, Australia

    Gooday! :hattip:
    Commiseration re the fire.
You will have seen that the possibility of it "exercises" us quite a bit ......
Title made me think being in Oz is why you need help :D

  4. Hi, lots of stuff on YouTube for T25 Vanagon and if you google club8090 you will get links to the club8090 website and forums for the T25. It all helps.

  6. Do you mean CU engine code ? The breather is built into the crank case isnt it ?

Got the timing scale and fan grill

Dot a couple of the pull out oil fillers.

  7. G`day Mick ... crikey that sounds like a line out of Crocodile Dundee !
We got both CU and CV engines here ... plus the Liquid Cooled 1.9 and 2.1.
2.1's are as common as backsides, they're everywhere ... but as the age and `economics' bite hard for owners heaps just go the Subbie route. eg. Here, to do a complete rebuild the CV Type 4 (same as Porsche 914) including Heads (about $1700 per pair), Cam and kit (about $700 - $800) and everything mechanical, not the plastic bolt-ons, equates to around $5000 ! ! ! Yep ... that's worth 3 exclamation marks indeed.
I'm near 70 and my ol' heart nearly stopped when I got a quote for Parts Rebuild ... and that is ME doing the whole job, not a Mechanics time and Labour included.
I'm thinking it maybe cheaper to just throw an all aluminium Chev LS-1 into it . . . . lol
No one has commented on Electronic Dissy conversion advice either.
The PCV / Breather is at the top, engine rear next to Dissy, and is a push in with O Ring, big black Plastic round device with large Breather Hose to inlet tract.
If I was ahead of myself I would have taken a photo of what the engine looked like before I disassembled it. It was a marvellous shade of Powder Pink from the Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher, but , be warned. IF this should ever happen to another soul, hose off the remnant Powder ASAP. The Powder is incredibly corrosive to Alloy and anything that is exp[osed Steel is RUST instantly ...
. . . and by the way I am absolutely dumb-struck by the LACK of wear in an engine that has done 200,000k's in Oz climate (though the car hasn't seen Desert Temps, mostly East Coast) ... the Pistons and Bores can likely re-installed with new Rings and a very fine hone. Cheers, with thanks to all for help and replies. Geoffrey

. . . all DONATIONS greatly appreciated and are Tax deductable . . . lol But the exchange rate is a shocker too . . ! Wasn't a pretty sight, no.

Don ... the fella with the van ... trapsing all over the Nation ... wandering the outback ... making mayhem and mischief where ever he goes ??? I met a bloke with a Pommie accent, he said his name was Don The Long Dong ... apparently he's very popular with the ladies ! Is that him . . . ?? Does he know where to get bits for a Type 4 / Porsche 914 though . . . . .

A 123 distributor takes some beating, but didn’t the CV have an electronic distributor from the factory?

The UK has virtually nothing for a Type 4 and you’ll have to import anyway; http://www.aircooled.net/ will have everything you need for the engine internals.

Incidentally, I don’t think a CV Type 4 is the same as Porsche 914; how many studs on the inlet manifold to head? VW has 4, Porsche has 3.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the blog :D

I’m from Nottinghamshire / Derbyshire, on the edge of the Peak District. Love Greece equally as much though :)

  15. Maybe .. but with the history and research since I've had the Bus I've never seen any other than Points type 009's. Some I've seen have Vac Advance, others don't. Apparently over there , UK and Euro T25/T3 Airs had Carbys too ... never seen one here. 123 Ignition is indeed good ... but Holy smoke Westy, they're frigging dear as .. about $400 plus from a supplier in Melbourne ... I've looked on Ebay UK ... Ebay.com ... Ebay.ca (Canada) and Accuspark, Superspark, Pertronix all have the modules for Dissy converting, but I don't know anyone who has used any / all of them. I did buy a Dissy .. won't mention the brand ... from UK, new, and things started going awry about 4 months after fitment ... firstly Condensor, then Rotor, then Vac Adv leaked ... it was absolute Chinese Marmite. I wrote and explained that over here we rely on `quality' as a prerequisite to distance. We can't afford to be 600 kilometres from a major City .. and 400 k's up some back country road .. and expect to source a 009 Rotor at the next Waterhole or the Servo at Ayres Rock in an Aboriginal settlement ay. Things are different here . . . the whole of the UK, including Ireland takes up about ONE QUARTER in area of NSW alone. Perth is 5000 K's from Sydney . . !
That's why quality, and reliability are essential to peace of mind when I think I'm `hittin' the track' for a few days. Geoff

Dunno about the long dong bit, but don’t call him a pommy . He’s a skirt wearing haggis basher that’s a naturalised Ozzie now. We miss him. If you see him, point him back to the nursing home and tell him to get back on here and mod this lot!
